Not connecting to Network

Catching me off guard with that question. Alright.

    1) Type services.msc in the Start menu then press Enter. Disable IPHelper service. Disable Homegroup services.

    2) See my previous screenshot on how to set sharing properties. Not connecting to Network

(Easiest and best for this, is to make sure all machines have same user name and password.)

    3) On all machines, open Windows Explorer. It's different for 7, 8 but if you apply yourself, you'll eventually be able to figure out differences. (Questions are fine if needed.)

On 8: Open ribbon. See Brink's tutorial if needed to do that.

Then View | options | Change folder and search options

When that opens, click View tab. Scroll to bottom and uncheck the box for "Use Sharing Wizard (Recommended)"

    Click OK so it saves.

On 7: The process is similar. I'm on 8 at the moment, so can't say precisely.

    4) On any machine, go to Windows Explorer (same as "My Computer" or "Computer", where you can see all of your hard drives.)

8: Click "Map network drive" then in the folder box put: \\remotepcname\share name

    For example: \\Computer1\sharing1

Note: On the remote computer 1, you have to set the folder or drive you want to share as well, with permissions for Everyone. This is done in Windows Explorer.

Honestly, I am going to stop right here, because although it is simple for me, it is extremely hard to convey with proper meaning. It is complicated, but simple in practice. You just have to know. See what you can do with this and please tell us or ask us anything at all you want!

This is why MS made Homegroup, but if it can not work for you, you're stuck without help. But we try our best!

Oh, I know what you mean now. I agree that's the way I prefer to share files too.
Turning off IPHelper seemed to help. Other devices not show up under Network, but it still says I'm not connected to a network and I can't remote connect. Which I would very much like to be able to do.

    It's an IPv6 linklocal address.

Thanks for that. It appears the problem is just with the status information in Network and Sharing Centre, as the physical network is available and can be seen. Can you:

    From a command prompt - type net use \\{computer name\{share name}

Where computer name is a computer on your network and share name is a share on that computer.

So, now we just have to find out why the status is incorrect. Are you using any third-party security applications?

    No, not currently.

Well here's what happened: I previously had SpyBot-S&D installed then something went wrong, I'm not sure exactly what, and I used Windows 8's Refresh ability. This removed the program. Could Windows have uninstalled it incorrectly, thus causing the issues?

It's certainly possible, but we'd have to know what changes spybot makes to the network settings to know for sure. From what I've seen on the Spybot forums, running their application with Windows 8 is not guaranteed to work. There's a couple of things worth trying:

    1. Change the network settings for your PC from dynamic IP address to static IP address/Gateway/DNS - reboot and test.
    2. Export the following registry key and attach here - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\NetworkList

Also, please check the permissions on that key.
