Please edit this if needed or post a better or different document. Thanks

Basic rules of networking on Windows (I'm assuming this includes 8, 8.1)

1. Computers need to be in the same WORKGROUP

2. Computers in the same network need to have different IP numbers

3. Computers should be able to ping each other (CMD ping \\192.168.0.9) and enter your user name and password)

4. No 2 or more computers in the same network should have the same computer name

5. Just because you can't see a computer in the networking window doesn't mean it's not there, try "//xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" in Windows Explorer

6. Private networks should consist of the following IP numbers: 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 or 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 or 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255

7. Turn on File Sharing and Network Discovery, check use user name and password to connect to other computers

8. Every computer that a user needs access to in the network should have them as a user on it

9. Share the folders or drives you want to have access to on the network

10. If you still have problems it could be possible hardware networking is bad in one of the computers

11. You may need to have your user name and password on the computer you are going access??

12. If it asks for user name and password (under the heading of Account) use the computer name and password on the computer you are accessing??

13. Check to see if there are any other networks installed and for remove HomeGroups, these may need to be removed.

What is the purpose of this list? Are you asking if the assertions are correct?

As far as I know:

1. Computers need to be in the same WORKGROUP
Not necessarily, no.
2. Computers in the same network need to have different IP numbers
Yes
3. Computers should be able to ping each other (CMD ping \\192.168.0.9) and enter your user name and password)
ping, yes. You don't enter name and password for ping though
4. No 2 or more computers in the same network should have the same computer name
yes
5. Just because you can't see a computer in the networking window doesn't mean it's not there, try "//xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx" in Windows Explorer
yes but you already pinged it.
6. Private networks should consist of the following IP numbers: 10.0.0.0-10.255.255.255 or 172.16.0.0-172.31.255.255 or 192.168.0.0-192.168.255.255
depending on your router.
7. Turn on File Sharing and Network Discovery, check use user name and password to connect to other computers
don't have to turn on network discovery.
8. Every computer that a user needs access to in the network should have them as a user on it
no, not required.
9. Share the folders or drives you want to have access to on the network
yes
10. If you still have problems it could be possible hardware networking is bad in one of the computers
ok
11. You may need to have your user name and password on the computer you are going access??
not necessarily. A user - needn't be yours.
12. If it asks for user name and password (under the heading of Account) use the computer name and password on the computer you are accessing??
or workgroup/computer name or domain/computer name or microsoft account.
13. Check to see if there are any other networks installed and for remove HomeGroups, these may need to be removed.
don't know what you mean.
