Hi, I have three Win 8 PCs at my office and a Win 7 Pro PC at home. Does anyone have a clear set of instructions for how I can set up remotes access so I can work on my office PCs from home? These are all my PCs too, not a company I work for. Many thanks all.

Hi there. Don’t know too much about it, but I shy away from 3[SUP]rd[/SUP] party apps. MS features are designed to work with the OS.

From the Start Screen > Type remote desktop > Enter or (All) Apps screen. It's in the accessories column. There are help files to learn. You can save different connections to use again.

Thanks Broe23b but Team Viewer's too expensive, at $600 - $2,500 for the moment. I also agree with Hippsie, MS has designed their Remote desktop to work perfectly with Windows. I'll try that but I wasn't sure about port designation from something I read. Apparently that's a little tricky.

Wow! That is expensive!

I'm sure someone will come along to help. Just ask away to keep the thread going.

You need 8 pro at work to get remote desktop option.

If you need free, you could try something like tight vnc.

So you have a VPN into the office already.

Hi Guys, I'm almost there but just need a little more feedback and help. I'm sitting here at the work Win 8 Pro PC to allow RDC. When I look at the computer name, I see three things (I've substituted the real names): Computer Name - John, Full Computer Name - John.smith.local, and the Domain - smith.local. And I also have the IP Address.

When I try and remote in from my home Win 7 Ultimate PC, what do I type in for the Computer name and Username? I'm somewhat stumped.

An hour ago I tried typing in the IP address of the work PC from my home PC and couldn't make a connection. I'm missing something here.

Thanks to anyone who can help me solve this.

Hi there glad to see you're making progress. :)

Is it allowing it to wake it if it's sleeping? If not, that setting would be in your Network adapters. Ethernet controller or wireless adapter, whatever you're using.

Hi Hippsie, sleep mode has been turned off.

Hmmm, ?? I'm still stumped. I might have to bite the bullet and get the local IT company out to take a look with me.

I'm installing Spiceworks to help me map and identify all the hardware on our network. Then I might be able to start unraveling.

TeamViewer is free for non commercial use but anyway...

You can put in the computer name or the ip. However unless you are on the same network the system will not be able to map your computer name (John) to the ip address 123.456.789.012 (or whatever) unless you add a mapping in your host file (which is found in C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc\hosts) You can update this using notepad as administrator.

To start with try the following - from a command prompt try pinging the pc - I made up the IP address - you will probably see something like this:

PS C:\Windows\system32> ping john
Ping request could not find host john. Please check the name and try again.
PS C:\Windows\system32> ping 192.168.1.82
Pinging 192.168.1.82 with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 192.168.1.82: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.82: bytes=32 time=1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.82: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Reply from 192.168.1.82: bytes=32 time<1ms TTL=64
Ping statistics for 192.168.1.82:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 1ms, Average = 0ms

Let us know how that goes. Once you can ping it you can use RDP. If you can't ping it it could be asleep (as HypsieGypsie said) or the route could be blocked. Lets try that first.

Incidentally I normally use the IP - it should tell you if it can't connect. Something like this - note I can't connect to this computer but can ping it as it is a linux machine not supporting RDP. It is only an example :)

Hi Adam, the "unable to connect" window screenshot is exactly what I got when at home. I'll head back there and try to ping this work PC from there. Many thanks.

Hi Adam, the ping result said Destination Host unreachable, several times. I used the IP address.
Packets: sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0.

Cheers.

So you can ping the IP from home OK? What happens if you try to use RDP using that same IP?

And is that IP the external IP of the computer at work or is it the router? You may need to look at this Allow Remote Desktop connections from outside your home network

I've only used RDP on the same network but that guide looks fairly easy to follow (I hope).

No, the ping didn't work. Destination host was unreachable. No joy.

The external IP was the computer, not the router. I need to identify the router's IP tomorrow.

Hi Adam, thanks for your assistance. I had an IT guy come look at the setup and he though the issues might lie somewhere within the registry that's preventing a connection. So we decided to reinstall Windows to this PC, creating a new user profile and workgroup network connection. I've done that this week but not tried a remote connection yet. I will tonight. Right now I'm having trouble deleting some previously created folders from the previous profile and server. Cheers.
