Win 8 HP Laptop Connects to WiFi but Not to the Internet

    Hello,

I have an HP Pavilion g7-2233cl Laptop running Windows 8. I bought it new (refurbished) about a year and a half ago.

Until recently, I’ve had no problem connecting to the Internet via WiFi. But recently, although everything says I’m connected to our home WiFi and things are working swimmingly, I cannot access anything on the Internet. I get messages like “Unable to connect” or “Cannot show this page.”

We have other computers on the same WiFi, and none of them are having a problem.

I’ve tried several remedies based on tips I’ve seen on the Internet (using a different computer, of course). For example, I:

    Deleted all the temp files.

Flushed a bunch of stuff using the Admin. Command Prompt:
    ipconfig /flushdns
    nbtstat –R
    nbtstat –RR
    netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
    netsh winsock reset

    Disabled Webroot.

Connected to the router via an ethernet cable.

Tried System Restore to about a month earlier.

    Nothing helped.

    Any suggestions?
    Bill

Airplane mode and firewall settings are what come to mind. try disabling your firewall. if you can connect, then it's one of the settings.

Make sure you have only one adapter working at the time, the rest should be disabled.

Airplane Mode is off. I tried disabling the Windows Firewall; that didn't help.

Re: "Make sure you have only one adapter working at the time, the rest should be disabled."

Listed are Qualcomm Atheros adapter and Realtek Family Controller. I tried disabling one and then the other. Didn't help.

Thanks for the ideas. I'll add them to my ever growing list of remedies that haven't worked. By process of elimination, maybe finally I'll find the answer. Buy Windows 7?

    Any other ideas folks?

Goto Control Panel->Internet Options then the Connections tab and click on the LAN settings button. At the bottom of that dialog, make sure the "Use a proxy server..." box is not checked.

The box does not have a check mark.

Thanks for the suggestion, however. Any other ideas anyone?

Someone suggested I try pinging the address name and IP address for a website. The ping gave me the proper replies in both cases. So, apparently I'm connected, as all other indicators have shown.

Would it be a good idea to uninstall and reinstall Firefox? But Internet Explorer doesn't work either, so that doesn't seem like the likely culprit.

I'm not a tech expert, so let me know if any of the assumptions above are incorrect.

You said you connected to the router by cable and still could not connect? This tells me it is more than just a wireless problem. What about when you connect directly to the modem by cable?

Our Comcast unit is a router/modem. One and the same.

Ok, either way, you can't connect by cable, right?

It is most likely a Gateway, which is one of the eMTA models. If they can go into the gateway. They can check to make sure that they are not having any upstream or downstream issues. If they can connect to the "Xfinity" hotspot that is enabled on the gateway. They should be able to get a connection. If not, then their Gateway has been taken offline by comcast.

I am betting that Comcast is either having issues in their area, or unprovisioned their Gateway for some reason. Or the OP may have not paid their bill.

For the OP. What is the model of Gateway that Comcast is leasing to you? It will state on the label of the gateway.
