Brand New Laptop EXTREMELY slow internet connection

Hi, I have a brand new Windows 8 Dell Inspirion laptop, and it has a horrible internet connection. I have not downloaded any new programs and I don't visit shady websites so I don't think it's a virus. Sometimes the internet is just moderately slow, and sometimes it just completely won't move, I will type in a web address and it will "think" about loading the page for 20 minutes before finally telling me it can't.

The problem is not with my wifi, I have another laptop that runs Windows 7 and have no issues with that one, or any other device on the network. It's just the windows 8 laptop.

I tried to google this and it seems like a common problem in new windows 8 machines. I am starting to think I should have just shelled the extra cash for a mac. I am almost entirely computer illiterate, so I had a very hard time following the various threads about this issue and I really need someone to walk me through it like I'm your great grandmother.

    I have Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 3160
I tried updating the driver, but it tells me the driver is already up to date.

    Welcome to Eight Forums,

Have you tried connecting your laptop to another Wi-Fi networks/hotspots? See if the issue persist.

Also, since you are using a dual band Wi-Fi adapter, try fiddling with the band setting. Is the router you're trying to connect also a dual band technology?

Hi thank you for your response. I have a Motorola NVG510 with AT&T. I am not very computer saavy so I don't know how to tell if this a dual band router or how to change the band settings.

Alrighty.... firstly, see if you can follow some troubleshooting tasks here. It's quite long but might be worth reading. You should be able to follow the instructions as they have screen captures.

I read through the troubleshooting but I am not sure if this applies to my problem. I don't think that the problem is with the router, all of the other computers and devices on the network work just fine. My laptop is the only one with Windows 8 and the only one with problems.

Cherriebark, what does it show for this screen. http://192.168.1.254/xslt?PAGE=C_1_0 for User Rate, Max User Rate & Rate Cap? As for slow speed. That Gateway does have a bad history of its Wifi Chipset not being the best. You may be better off just going with a third party Wireless Access Point, vs. the built in wifi on the gateway that you have.

Is this the information you're talking about?
    Status

    Broadband Connection Up
    Line State Up

    Status On
    Network ID (SSID) ATT208
    Authentication Type WPA
    Network Key 7320679629

    Line 1 Not Configured
    Line 2 Not Configured

I don't know what a third party wireless access point is I'm really at a loss.

Cherriebark, he means something like this: D-Link | Smooth wireless networking, with a Wi-Fi bridge and prices to suit | D-Link USA

You would plug it in with a LAN cable directly to the Motorola NVG510 then use it as your wireless access point. It would eliminate using the wireless portion of the NVG510 entirely.

However, you say other computers connect fine through the Motorola so I'm not so sure that is your problem.

Windows often says it has the latest driver for some devices when it really doesn't. Download and install the drivers from here: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Det...ng&ProdId=3776

The large one on the bottom of list.

Still need the output of "netsh wlan show all" from a command window. Also you posted information that I did not ask for, from the gateway. You need to go to the "Settings" tab, then "Broadband" tab and post the information that I asked for.

You have now given us your SSID and Wifi key, for everyone to know.
