Connect to win7 hotspot

I have a friend who has win7, which makes the hotspot that I can not see on my Win8 and all other friends who are on win7 can see the connection. I want to know what is the problem?

Just for clarification, you can see and connect to other wifi hotspots but just can't connect to the hotspot your friend created on his Win 7 machine?

Is it possible that the hotspot running on your friend's machine is using the 5Ghz band and your laptop doesn't support 5Ghz? I'm not even sure it's possible for your friend to create a 5Ghz hotspot but, if true, it could explain why you can't even see it.
