Sub 10 Mbps results on wifi, from a 300M optic fibre plan

Hi all,

These speedtest.net results on phone (iphone 4s, samsung note 2, LG optimus g pro, etc.), tablet (ipad 2) and my laptop (hp envy sleekbook 14 k-016tx) are very disappointing. The router is Asus RT AC65U, but my devices can only use N and not AC. The speeds mentioned in the title is from tests taken in the living room, almost right next to the router. If I move further away and put walls between the device and the router, it goes down to <1 Mbps.

I don't know what other information I should provide, but here is a screenshot of the latest router settings that I've tried.

The firmware is up-to-date: 3.0.0.4.374_5656 and speeds on LAN reach 220+ down and 150+ up.

Please let me know if I am setting up something wrong, or if this is the expected speeds. It has made internet access very irritating as I am not able to place my laptop in the living room and extend a LAN cable (which blocks the way as it is not very long) most of the time.

Wifi will depend on both the quality / protocol of your Router and your devices -- you'll be lucky to get a 2 - 3 Mbs wifi download whatever the fibre optic cable can deliver.

Another thing to consider is to add an extender / repeater - this improves poor signal immensely. If say your SSID is DOGGY then the extender will simply create your new one with the name DOGGY-EXT same passwords etc -- these work really well.

Wifi isn't (yet) the fastest protocol around.

"N" full duplex standard is only theoretical and max speed is only 150m anyway. A lot of 802.11N adapters are actually Half-duplex which limits even theoretical speed to half. Ad to that different overhead and signal strength and quality and you are down to 35M in a hurry, after that it can go just down.

A lot depends on the chipset that the router is using for WAN to LAN and the device that is using WiFi. Include with that environmental variables such as distance, what is between you and the WiFi A/P (concrete solid wall, block wall, wood framing, glass), signal interference, weather interference, etc..

Your router needs to go to 40mhz for Channel Bandwidth, set it for a lower channel (ie 1) and use a set extension channel, not auto. If you have 5ghz available on the router, set for 5ghz and if the wifi devices have 5ghz capability, they will work with less interference. Also set to just work on Wireless-n only mode.

Having it set as is. You will never get better speeds. It is set for what is considered a hybrid mode. That is to work with older legacy Wireless-b/g equipment and newer Wireless-n equipment.

This is my router set up.. You can go off this if you want :D.. I have my router protection turned on due to many other routers around my area that affect mine... I hope I'm on the same page as everyone else but I did run into that same problem a few months back.

jpolacko, turning on QOS & Protected mode have nothing to do with neighboring A/P's. It only affects your LAN. It will actually cause more problems, than it is worth. Both of those settings need to be disabled.

QOS was turned on by default never messed with that just left it alone.. I can turn them off. Thanks for the information :thumbsup:

jpolacko, turning on QOS & Protected mode have nothing to do with neighboring A/P's. It only affects your LAN. It will actually cause more problems, than it is worth. Both of those settings need to be disabled.

I turned them off and noticed a improvement. I found out the QOS is if you are streaming multimedia ( Only thing I have that does that is my Hopper from Dish) and VOIP.

It will not matter for your case with Wireless-n. It will cause more bad than good. Only if you are doing a lot of media streaming through the router/wifi with a lot of devices. Then you would need to use it. If it is only one or two devices that are streaming, just turn off QOS.

First of all thank you to everyone for all of your replies!

I'm almost ready to accept that this is the speed that I will be getting, but I can be a bit stubborn. My apartment setup is not ideal for wifi (the router can only be placed near one edge of the apartment and the rooms are all stretched out on the other end), but I will definitely try and optimize my settings as per your suggestions.

In my case, it is quite likely that there can be more than 2 streaming videos on the internet, and QOS was something a representative of my ISP suggested me turn on. I still don't know which one is better yet. I will definitely write back when I get a good feel of QOS's impact. For some reason even when the devices leave my home, the router can consistently display 10 devices connected to wifi, perhaps this is a problem? Is there something I can do to minimize the damage?

As for 5Ghz channels, only the relatively newer phone models (they're still pretty outdated by now) can connect, but I hear that its range is worse than that of the 2.4 Ghz one? It certainly seems like it, but as of writing I have not had the opportunity to conduct testing. Perhaps they are better due to the interference factor. Again, I will update you guys.

I used the Xirrus wifi inspector software, and it indicates that some of my neighbours do not keep their wifi on, so I thought auto-channel was a good choice. And my router only offers 'above' for extension channels (or 'below' if I pick a high channel), which seemed weird. Should I account for the channel overlapping issue? I'm still quite new to this so I'm not sure if I can trust everything I find on the internet.

You are never going to find any setup that is going to be perfect. You have to learn what works best. It has always been debated whether QOS should be on or off. With Wireless-b & g, turn it on. For Wireless-n & ac, turn it off. But you have to also set the router/access point to only use the Wireless-n band and 40mhz channel.

There is no damage when multiple devices connect to the router. You are over thinking all of this at this point. Just set it up and forget. There is no need to twiddle with any settings after you connect to the router, once you get the router setup properly. If you have older Wireless-b/g devices. Get a separate Wireless Access Point, just for those devices.

Some of your neighbors might be using at least some of your bandwidth too. Is that only your router and Internet Provider ? As for interference that could be making you problems, there's two kinds of them. One is pure radio interference from nearby emitters of same or close frequencies, other WiFi or even bluet tooth that is also at 4.2 GHz. That can be attenuated by some degree by using channels at far spectrum as possible. Stronger signal can help in that case a lot as well as with going thru the walls. Keep i mind that any metal objects, even if they are not physically in the way, can distort signal as it's already only 100mW. A directional antenna on both ends can help a lot.
