Best way to sync files between 2 PCs?

So I just got off the phone with my dad, and he's been struggling mightily with his 2 home PCs (both notebooks) regarding file synchronization between the 2.

A while back, I told him to give BitTorrent Sync a try (quite popular), but he's been noticing that a small portion of his files were not synchronizing correctly (they are on the same folder where other files were syncing properly, so what gives?), so he's having a lot of issues with that right now.

So I had to ask eightforums.com about this, what's the best way to sync files between two PCs connected to the same network? and please, no cloud solutions.

Thanks!.

Same network, drag and drop between the folders. I personally do not like it, due to there is a chance of failure. Your father really needs a NAS, to save stuff on, if he is going to be working at two different computers.

My brother set up on his server rack space that he rents. A Owncloud server, that we all use to store data offsite to. Makes it easy for me to grab something out of my folder on my iPhone, when I need to send say a pdf by my myfax account, or need to pull it up to look at something.

I do store stuff like system backups on my personal NAS on my network. But everything is automatic to the family cloud share.

Yeah a NAS solution would be the perfect scenario, but too costly IMO, and I don't think he really needs it though.

Thanks for replying.

OneDrive uses the cloud, no?

Gonna give it a go mate, will report back in a few days.

Thanks. +rep

NAS's do not cost as much as you think. As for Cloud Drive options. Google is about the cheapest route, or even go with a Box.com account.

With a NAS, you aren't synchronizing the files, but rather storing them in 1 central location.

If you want to sync between the two machines, you can just use robocopy. It's built right into Windows. Use the /mir switch and it synchronizes 2 diretories

I've also use the Free File Sync Project on source forge. It's great for those who need a visual more than a command line utility. FreeFileSync | SourceForge.net

Another one to try would be Laplink Pro, it is made just for the purpose of synching files.
