Hi, So recently me and my mother needed to connect our Windows 8.1 laptops to our router harddrive ( Extern harddrive connected to our ASUS AC56U usb port that is placed there for this reason. So the router is also a nas..

The thing is. All our other computers, My midtower windows 8.1 computer, our other windows 7 computers etc, connect to the router without any sort of problems. But me and my mothers laptops just says insufficent system recourses. Cant connect to this selected device thingy.. ( Translating the text from swedish in my head and i dont recall exactly what it said..)

i went into the tast manager and the computer is under no load what so ever. everything ran under 30-20%
cant see why this is happening and when i google it i cant find anything like this..

Laptop 1 specs: 500Gb ( 300Gb free of 441Gb) HDD, 8GB RAM, 4 core 1.9-2.4GHZ AMD cpu, intergrated gpu chip + mobo gpu chip in crossfire ( this doesent have any effect on this problem so im not very specific )

Laptop 2: 500Gb ( 120gb used? dont remember ) 3 programs installed, ( AMAYA OS and DesignStudio and Chrome)
2 core 1Ghz cpu intergrated graphics ( Cheapo 11" laptop we got in a rush because her old computer did not work with the 2 first programs.. )

Sounds more like a credential issue with the router, not with the OS. What is the brand of the NAS?

Brand of the "NAS" is a simple External harddrive connected to the Router usb port that is designed just for this use.
because everyone exept for thoose computers can connect is it really a problem like that? i rather try everything else before i try messing with the router. its hard to convince my dad to fix the stuff and i dont have the control of it. My dad has, And its next to impossible to do what i need to do by telling him what to change and stuff. if i need to fix router settings then could you give me some tips on what i should change? Remember. its not really a nas. its just a network harddrive accessable to everyone who got the code.

You need to read the manual for your router, to fix the problem. The problem is when using USB Pocket drives as a network drive. You run into, were they go to sleep after a while, and then you end up not having them online.

You are better to purchase a real NAS, instead of using a portable hard drive as a NAS.

Um. thats not the problem. When i try accessing the harddrive with my current computer it finds the files the second i open the drive. So its not going into sleepmode or anything because if it did, it would have taken a bit longer before it shows all the files if it even opens the drive..
We have had 2 Nas'es but one for some reason fell down from the shelf and the other was baaad... it was slow. the fan was loud as an hairdryer and it was more trubbeling than ever. This is the fastest and most stable setup we ever used.
the thing why i dont get it is because the laptop im trying to connect worked fine before i installed the new operating system. im not blaming windows 8 because mine works just fine. but im 100% sure that the problem is not because its an external harddrive connected to the router... though, the drive is not a little portable one its actually a 3.5" HDD connected with USB 3 and an power coord. we can even access the drive with our phones without any problem what so ever..

i dont think that the problem is because the laptops are on a wireless connection?
And we have checked the router settings multiple times. but we still dont know fully what settings its supposed to be set to but it has worked fine before...

I solved it. I tried to connect it via "Networkplace" instead of network device, it worked to connect to that for some reason, I then tried to connect with Network device and then it worked!
so yeah... Weird...
