Windows 8.1 Laptop, home network disappears frequently.

I just got a Windows 8 laptop for work, and my SSID does not display. If I change the channel on my router (a Dlink DIR-645) from its current channel to something different, it will show up; I can then connect and use the internet without trouble until shut down/sleep mode, then the problem comes back.

I have restarted the modem and router after switching channels, I have changed channels from 1-8 and it works the same way every time. What am I missing? Firmware is up to date on the router. Let me know what other information I can provide.

This only happens on my home network - wireless at work is functioning properly. My home network also has multiple devices (tablets, macbook, chromebook, laptop) that all play nicely on the network together.

Your problems sounds typical of what has been happening since Windows 7 SP1. You just have to click on wireless and find the SSID for your home network.

As for channels. Either use 1 or 5. Some devices have problems with the higher channel numbers.

Thanks for the response, unfortunately, the SSID not displaying/showing in Windows is the root of the problem; hence, I am unable to simply click on it, nor can it find the SSID if I manually attempt to enter the name.

I temporarily swapped to a Linksys flashed with DD-WRT and the problem seems to have resolved itself for now, but I would like to use the other router (DIR-645) that was originally having the problem. If anyone has any input, I would appreciate it.

Some routers have issues. Also a lot is channel congestion and how far you are from the router.

The router works with Windows when I swap the channel. Shut the laptop, it sleeps, open it up, SSID is gone, swap the channel, it's back.

It works like this on any channel 1-8.

I am sitting directly next to the router.

Unfortunately, this is not a channel congestion issue, nor a distance issue.

    Tried the following:

You can use Device Manager to change the power management settings for a network adapter. To disable this setting in Device Manager, expand
Network Adapters, right-click the adapter, clickProperties, click the Power Management tab, and then clear the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power check box.

Will update if this works and close this out, otherwise, still open to suggestions.
