Not getting access to a shared drive

Hi, I'm setting up a little media center (running Win 7) to connect to my TV. I was thinking about sharing one of the drives on the media center so I can access it from all my computers and put pictures, music and movies on it as needed.

I went to Advanced Sharing, checked the Share this folder box and put full control on Everyone. Nevertheless I'm getting an error when I'm trying to access the drive from my laptop (which is running 8.1). Says that Windows cannot access the drive. I have disabled password protections and all that but still nothing.

It does seem however that if I create a folder inside the Media center drive and share it then I can access it with no problems and add files and do what I want.
Perhaps that is what I'll need to do to bypass the problem?

But is there anyway I can access a shared drive? I have no idea what else to try

I had a couple of USB 3.0 Docking stations and used mainly WD 1 TB Sata III internal drives or 750 GB WD Sata II. They were all WD Black and never spun down except when I powered down the dock. I was able to share the entire WD drive. But the petty hassles were so frequent I did what you did. I made a new folder and moved all the others into it. Then I shared that folder.

I think that method is less likely to cause problems in the future.

Edit: The docking stations I used under both Vista and W7. But the networking Vista and later is about the same as W8. It definitely prefers to share folders.

You have to go into the software that you are using, and make sure it is also mapping that drive/folder out for DLNA sharing.
