    internet and router

    Hello
I am at a friend's and brought my old router.
I plug a cable into the top port in the router and run it to my pc and get internet via Comcast. It is my network not the Infinity public one which is available.
I have tried to run my pc wirelessly but cannot figure it out. Her old modem has only one Ethernet port which my cable runs from it to the router as I have said.
Is there a way to run off my battery?
MaybeI could use her pc and ipconfig it to get the gateway and then use that to see what is in the modem as far as keys go. Then disconnect her pc and use that password to allow my pc to run wirelessly -or not?
    Thank you
    Peter

    You are close,

while using LAN ( Ethernet from the router to your pc ) do ipconfig /all to get all networks from here you should see your routes emitted default gateway.

Then you can go and type in that ip address listed under gateway in your browser. From there you put in the router login details and can set up your wireless network.

    if that doesn't work

A lot of older modems defaulted to Ethernet only.
it might just be that you need togo into the modem/router setup and enable wifi.

Or the fact that their friend has one of Comcast's All-in-one Gateway. Placing the router behind it, creates a Double-Nat.

Good catch! I had to reread the OP several times to see that.

    modem

The modem is very old and only has one Ethernet port. I have the triple play gateway at home and this is not a gateway.
I have not accessed the modem yet as I will have to use her computer to ping so I can get the address then hopefully 10.0.0.1 or 192,168,2,1.
Then If I can see the key in the modem I will be able to change it in my router.
    Does this sound right?

You have me a bit confused now. If her modem is just a modem with no built-in wifi/router then it should be a simple matter of plugging the LAN port of your router into the modem then either use the wireless portion of your router or connecting by cable to the router.

If the router needs configured first then connect it to your computer by cable to one of the ports, not the LAN port, and configure it. You should know the IP address of the router and password. What router is it? Easy to get the info if you don't have it.

Normally, DHCP should be set to automatic.

I brought my router over and know the passphrase or key that I used at home. I used that to access the internet.
I hooked my router to her modem and then connected my pc to the router to get internet in my router's network not public Infinity WIFI so I would be more secure.
Do you think I can access her modem with her pc , find the key in the modem and place it in my router for a wireless laptop connection?
Please don't get stressed over this as I do have internet than goodness but I was hoping to access the internet so I could go to another room. I am a bit disabled and it would be great.

No stress here, just trying to understand what you are trying to do. Hard sometimes to communicate about technical stuff in writing.

I guess what I'm not understanding at this point is why would her modem have a key if just a modem? They don't usually have any kind of security, that is all done with the router and your computer. Again, maybe something is getting lost in the writing.

Are you sure her modem is not also a router?
