DDNS correct creation including VPN usage questions ?

    Hello Windows Eight Forums.

Basically I would appreciate some help and advice in correctly configuring Dynamic DNS
using my DLINK DSL-3680. I am using Windows 8.1.

My first question is. Is it okay to use DDNS when I also use Anonine VPN ?
if it is okay, which IP address ahould i use when creating my DDNS Hostname using dlinkddns.com ? the one Anonine VPN gives me or my network assigned IP address for my laptop. Im finding this troublesome. id really appreciate some clear concise advice.

I need to create a Dynamic DNS and port forward on my DLINK DSL-3680.
I admit im finding this quite daunting seeing as this will be the first time ive attempted this.
Im concerned about configuring it wrongly, and creating security issues for myself on my laptop.

I used the complimentary free dynamic DNS service my DLINK DSL-3680 Router offers for all the users of their products found here dlinkddns.com.
I successfully created an account at dlinkddns.com. activated my account through the corresponding email I was sent.
I then created my new hostname. It then asked me for my IP address.
I had ANONINE VPN activated at the time so the IP address I was using was given by them.
Should I use this IP address when creating my new dlinkddns hostname ?
Ot, should I use a different IP Address, Id appreciate any help understanding this please ?
Should I create My new dlinkddns hostname with my anonine VPN turned off ?

Which IP address should I use when creating my new dlinkddns Hostname ?
Would using the IP address anonine VPN gives me when creating my dlinkddns hostname cause any security Issues for me ?

Here are my questions in a nutshell:

Is it okay to use DDNS when I also use Anonine VPN ?
Which IP address ahould i use when creating my DDNS Hostname using dlinkddns.com ?
Should I use the IP Address Anonine VPN gives me, or my network assigned IP address for my laptop ?
Should I create My new dlinkddns hostname with my anonine VPN turned off ?
When I enter my new dlinkddns Hostname onto my browsers address bar, Should it direct me to my Routers admin Log in page. the one where I need to enter my router user name and password to access my routers control panel ?

Apologies if my post struggles to to clearly explain my issues. I have tried to explain as clearly and concisely as possible.

I appreciate any help and advice given
I look forward to any replies.
    Regards.

The IP address you get from Anonine... is that a static IP address?

You need to use your external facing IP address (google "whats my ip" and that will display your external IP) but generally this will change which is where the DDNS comes in, your router will or DDNS client will talk to your DDNS provider and update the DNS when your IP address changes.

In theory it should work as even if you get a new IP address from Anonine your client/router should update the DNS with the new IP address but i have no experience witt Anonine.

When you goto your DDNS hostname you wont get your router login page but you would need to setup port forwarding to tell your router where to send that incoming traffic.

I think the ip address anonine assignes to me is static.
the IP address my ISP asignes to me is dynamic.
I turned off my vpn (anonine) then checked for my IP address (which shows my location ofcourse when i use ip lookup)

I then changed my new dlinkddns hostname to use my proper ip address (the ip im given when NO VPN is activated.
I then activated anonine VPN to see what happens. it says its activated and assigned me a new IP address different from my orginal IP address.
But, when i check my ip address using google. its says my IP address. is not the one assigned by anonine VPN but the original IP address the one i used when creating my dlinkddns hostname.
    Is this normal ?
im very new to this, so im still trying to get my head around all this and figure it all out.

Also if i type my new hostname onto my browser address bar it takes me to my router control panel. is this normal ?
    Thanks for replying.

It sounds like Anonine won't effect the DDNS but you will have to see how that goes.

I wouldn't expect you to get your router control panel but this may be because you are accessing it from within your home network.
You are best asking someone external to test that link and see what they get.

If when you ping your DDNS hostname it replies with your external IP address everything looks good, you will now just need to setup port forwarding to whatever it is you are hosting at home.

I'm no expert with Security but this may help with security... lets say you wanted to host a website you could access via a different port (example: www.mywebsitename.com:8712) and setup port forwarding to translate that from port 8712 to 80

This way you don't open up the standard http port (80) but can still hit your site that is hosted on 80 internally.

I have set all this up on a BT Home Hub 3 and 5, never a DLINK

i pretty much have a much better understanding now.
I do however have one more question in regards to port forwarding.
    As you mentioned here :

That port forwarding can translate for example port 8712 to port 80.
I've been reading up on how to port forward on my DLINK DSL-3680.
I know port 80 is an important port and its primarily TCP port 80, most often used by Hypertext Transfer Protocol, basically the Internet.
Could you please explain what this means:
about translating port 8712 to port 80 ?

    Thanks.

Someone can add to this or even correct me if i'm wrong but...

if you were to open port 80 "incoming" up it would basically allow anything over http to pass through your router which would be considered a security risk.

Translating a port from xxxx to 80 (in the example i gave 8712 to 80) would mean port 80 "incoming" would be denied/have no where to go.

Instead you hit your hosted application via a none standard port 8712 and it is "translated" to port 80 internally.

    Regards,
    Jamie
