How to use a NAS with Win 8

Hi
I've never had a NAS before and I've just got one in conjunction with a new Asus Win 8 laptop. I have a MyCloud EX4, and I'm trying to understand the best way to use it.

My understanding is that a NAS is designed to be used on the network to centrally store data. Not to just back it up to another hard disk, but to store and use the data directly from the NAS (both read/write).

If so, that brings me to file structure. How do the various users set up their user folders on the NAS, and still employ the normal Windows folders that exist like Documents, Videos etc. Is that what you do? Somehow move the standard windows user folders to the NAS and then when they open a file they are opening it from there? Or are they not used like this? Is it more like the data still resides on the individual machines and the NAS actually just backs it up?

Weird, I can't find any sort of discussion about this side of NAS. Everyone is talking about specs not how to use it.
thanks
Geoff

You can use it anyway that you want. What you have described is fine. If you have videos/music that everyone uses put them in the public folder in any set up you like. Then each user can have a folder that is locked with a password or not locked as you like. Within that you can set it up anyway you like.

Western Digital has some videos on how to do things on their site, also I'd guess there are some on youtube. I just set up a single disk unit and they have a download area for a dashboard utility that allows you to set the thing up with passwords etc.

Go to support area and give them the model and see what comes up in the way of manual, downloads, etc.

A NAS is just a computer without a video screen, keyboard or mouse. Basic a headless system. Just follow the manufacturer instructions for setting the NAS up.
