Solved Multiple Local Area Connections created at boot

Hi - I have a new Dell laptop with Windows 8.1 - I work from home & connect to the internet via my home wifi network.
The problem I have been experiencing is that my laptop connects to the internet at boot up but then disconnects for several minutes & then re-connects again. This coincides with the Network & Sharing Centre showing a number of Local Area Connections (numbered 3,4,5,6 etc) being created under Unidentified Public Networks. I have tried disabling the LAC's but they re-enable whenever I re-boot & I have the same issues again. My networking knowledge is very limited so
I'd be very grateful for any advice on how to rectify this issue. Thanks.

Those are not LAN connections. Those are just Virtual drivers that are installed by Windows 8. I am guessing that you have Hyper-V turned on. You can go into Network Connections in Control Panel, to see that it is showing those connections as Virtual adapters.

If you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from this machine it would be helpful.

I have a file that can fix these problems but I'm not completely sure why all the extra ISATAP adaptors are showing up.

Do you have an Ethernet cable plugged in?

That did get rid of the extra tunnel adaptors but this Ethernet connection problem is very strange. I'm seeing a rogue wired connection showing a static IP which I'm not sure where this could be coming from? It's best to remove any static entries from the IPv4 properties of this connection.

Can you go back into device manager and disable the Realtek Ethernet adaptor then repost the ipconfig/all.

If you do a search, it comes up that Comodo is one culprit of the Virtual adapters being created. Himachi is another. What Internet security software do you have installed? Also do you show Hyper-V enabled in Services.msc? Any games installed? The other is VPN software.

Sorry I haven’t replied earlier guys but I reached the limit of the number of daily posts I was allowed.

broe23 - thanks for your info. I do have Comodo installed on this laptop but don't have any games on it (is there a better AV/Firewall than Comodo that doesn’t interfere?). I've checked Services.msc and all references to Hyper-V show that it's not running (startup says Manual - Trigger Start).

Do you have Open VPN installed on this system or something called trust connect?

If one of those is installed then it's required to uninstall it because this version doesn't appear to be working with Windows 8.

After that you may need to go into Device Manager to remove all of the extra TAP-Win32 adaptors that something installed, not sure what.

Well something installed on this system has created another network with it's own IP and it's also creating those TAP 32 adaptors.

Use the guide in the link to remove Comodo completely though I'm not completely sure that is causing all these issues.

You might try removing all those TAP 32 adaptors from Device Manager.

Try uninstalling all of the Tapi connections. Something else is attached to them. Post the URL that Speccy gives you, after running it for inspection.

I've now completely removed Comodo (& the debris left over, eg registry entries etc) and have uninstalled the TAP connections from Device Manager. I then ran Speccy & the results are attached.

Following that, I have re-booted the laptop several times and it seems that the virtual network adapters are no longer being created

I will keep a close check on it for the next few hours & come back and mark it is 'problem solved' if the issue doesn't re-occur. Thank you so much for all your help so far, it's much appreciated.

Yes the uninstall tool for Comodo is required for complete removal. And I figured that lame TAP adaptors might require some manual removal. Is there an echo in this room?

Typical strange problem caused by an anti virus which is the opposite of what they were supposed to do.

Please mark this thread as solved :)
