This will happen more and more until IP V6 is able to replace V4. Do a google news search for "IP V4" - there are stories every day about companies and countries running out of IP V4 addresses.

In this case if one IP address is banned many users would be effected.
IPv4 IP's are not going to become scarce anytime soon. Right now there are enough IP's available for over 1.4 billion devices with the IPv4 IP scheme.

The funny thing is that if IPv6 was ready now. We still would not be using IPv4. We are not in any danger of running out of IP's. Especially since a lot of the reserved ones have just gotten released within the past year.

They are already scarce. The problem is that class A's were handed out early in the beginning and some companies have truckloads more than they will ever need. There are then others who actually need more and cannot get them.

BTW. Redmond Mag is a Microsoft Herring. I would not trust anything that comes out of their's or Microsoft's mouths.

Far from being exhausted. They are far from being exhausted. It is the whole Chicken Little effect that people get stuck on, thinking that we suddenly need IPv6.

Those organizations like Universities that are using IPv6. Are mostly using them internally, and on Internet 2. This is a better unbiased article on the current state of affairs, for the Internet. Internet to Reach 3 Billion Users but Majority Still Not Online | Business Wire

Do you work in the Internet industry? I've had to get additional IP's added to blocks from our vendors and it's getting much harder. I have to fill out paperwork and prove a need in order to get them to even consider giving me additional IPv4 addresses.

Back in 2011, IANA allocated the last remaining blocks of addresses in the ipv4 pool. It was estimated back at the beginning of 2014, we had about 23 million total usable addresses remaining. As of April, we were supposedly down to about 17 million remaining.

With the Americas running out of IPv4, it?s official: The Internet is full | Ars Technica

We are only working around issues due to "trickery" and techniques like Carrier Grade NAT (CGN) and regular NAT. Without these workaround technologies, we wouldn't have addresses left.

[guess]I think where we will wind up is using V6 for internet traffic but optionally remaining with V4 on the local network. The interface between the two will be done at the router/gateway. This way most of our equipment can be used as is until it gets replaced "naturally". The router will be able to manage both V4 and V6 devices on the local network.[/guess]
