No option to create homegroup

Hi, I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1x64 Pro. When I go to Network&Sharing Center, next to "Homegroup" I see in blue:"Available to join" instead of "Create Homegroup". If I click on "Available to join" it displays a 2nd page saying "User on WIN-V4BEBDAHMSL has created a homegoup on the network". However I never connected this Win8.1 PC to any other client in the LAN, it's a single PC. How can I cleanup this bogus homegroup so that the option to create one can be recovered? Thanks

  1. Control Panel->Homegroup->Leave Home Group
  2. Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Services
    - Disable Homegroup Listener
    - Disable Homegroup Provider

Note: If you don't use Home Group at all, then do the above. Re-enable the 2 sevices in step 2 will allow to create Homegroup.

Thanks topgun. You know, this is crazy, I left my PC as described at the start of the thread, I came back a few hours later, and now instead of "Available to Join" it reads "Ready to Create". Any idea why?

Hi topgun, I was thinking what changes might have caused this. The only change is that when I posted this thread I had Vmware running some clients (XP and 7). Before leaving I shut them down. So it's possible that while Vmware has some clients active that they create a homegroup?
(my LAN is wired and aside from myself no one else uses it)

No mention of VMware being active in both posts Win 7 and 8 forums?

Of course that was the issue but if VMware was mentioned in the first place it would have been easier to diagnose the issue. :)

Leaving the Homegroup on the VMware machine would have also fixed the issue.

Sorry, I did not suspect of Vmware in the first place, but then I realized that without Vmware the option to create a Homegroup reappeared. By the way, how do you leave the Homegroup in the Vmware machine?

I guess it is the same as you would in physical machine. Control Panel->Homegroup then click on leave the homegroup but make sure you have 2 services for Homegroup running then you can disable afterward.

Thanks topgun, I'll try that later. I sometimes copy/paste files from my PC to a VM machine and vice versa. Will leaving the homegroup in the VM machine cripple this feature?

I dont think so. I dont have a home group in my VM Machine at all. Just use drag and drop instead of copy and paste, it's faster.
