Then your wifi card is not 5ghz capable.

the Asus k53sv has an 802.11n single band wifi card. It's only capable of doing 2.4Ghz, hence the reason that you cannot see the 5Ghz band.

Easy to buy a dual band card for laptop and replace the existing one. Pretty cheap on auction sites. I did it. My laptop is only a year old and did not come with dual band card.

Age has nothing to do with it.

I just bought a half dozen brand new Dell Latitude e7440 laptops. The default card they come with is the Dell 1506 802.11n single band wifi-card. You can opt for the Dell 1540 dual band wireless N cards, or you can elect to get the Intel 7260-AC Wireless AC dual band (ARK | Intel® Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260). You can also get the Dell 1601 wi-gig card to work with their wireless dock.

So, even on a laptop purchased today you have to be careful that the wireless card supports the technology that you want to use. I have to be extremely careful when I get quotes and specs for laptops at work. I recently bought a business class Latitude for our office and was surprised to find the laptop did NOT include a webcam by default. I didn't catch it in the quote that a webcam wasn't included. Dell took it right back and sent me what I wanted, but I was just surprised to see that a webcam wasn't standard on a business class laptop where people do video conference chats all of the time.

Both of our Toshiba's came with 2.4ghz Realtek mini-cards. I swapped them out for the 7260 Dual-Band Wireless-ac minicard. It is not dependent on age of the machine. It is all about whether you purchase the machine "Off the Shelf", or designed it at time of purchase.
