Setting up a wifi hotspot - with difficulty

I am trying to setup a wifi hotspot in my Windows 8.1
I have been trying to do this manually in the Command Prompt as all the proprietry systems 4 No) I tried all failed after about 12 hrs
I used the following command "netsh wlan start hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=NAME=password"
    And obtained the correct response
I then typed "netsh wlan start hostednetwork" and got the following response
" The hosted network could not be started
The group or resource is not in the correct state to perform the requested operation"
How can I determine what this means and how is it resolved
I did check using the command prompt that this was possible with the computer and received acknowledgement
    Many thanks for any assistance

Probably silly idea , but have you checked that the wireless network adapter is fully enabled in Device Manager?

ICS or Internet Connection Sharing is going away. Using a computer as a Bridge for a connection. You are going to run into problems always.

You never stated what you are using for connecting to the Internet. If it is that computer and you are sharing the connection as I stated above. Really you would be best to just get a router to share the connection. If it is a Cellular mobile connection. They make routers that allow that. The Cisco RV-320 is just one, that you can connect a USB Cellular mobile hotspot into and share the connection.

check to see if your device supports hosted networks open up a command prompt as administrator and type or paste this command
    Code:
    netsh wlan show drivers |clip

This will copy the results to your clipboard , paste the results in your answer I highlighted the line in red that indicates my wifi card is capable of doing what you want

You might try using wireless N rather than B which is outdated. You should be able to change over to N by going into the routers settings and changing it to use 802.11n Only rather than the mixed settings.

You will also want to use security like WPA2 and AES encryption. Open networks may not even work for this.

ICS is inherently unreliable but sometimes can be made to work decently in some cases.
