Solved How did my Dell know my LAN Password?

I brought my Dell Venue 8 Pro with WIN 8.1 RT to my workplace for the first time. I am a fireman so we spend days at work in our "living quarters" I happen to be the one who set up and maintains our LAN. So that said I am also the one who set the password on the station router. I checked and yes the LAN is still password protected. But when I turned on my Venue it automatically connected to the network with internet connection. I fully expected to have to go into configuration and set up the connection. So how did it know the password? I'm concerned that my WPA Personal security is not working as it should.

Either someone turned off the Password. Or WPS is turned on. If you have it set for WPA(tkip)/WPA2(aes), along with a good strong password. It should be asking. It does help to know the router model, along with manufacturer. If you have used that computer for the router setup. It will always remember the associated password with the SSID.

Also who is the ISP that your station house uses for Internet.

I can assure you that my Dell Venue 8 Pro needed to have the pw entered in order to connect to my router. There is something else amiss as the Venue 8 doesn't have magical powers to be able to get past the router's security.

Well that confirms my thoughts. But I did check and My router security is WPA protected. I will have to take a better look at my recent schedule. But I have not had the Venue that long. Obviously I have brought it to work and forgot that I had. It's hell getting old.

The router is a Linksys the password is what I consider very strong, yet still remember able. It has numbers, letters (caps, & lower case.)

The best thing to do with the Station House. Is to go with a real hotspot that is used normally in cafe's. You can do it with the Linksys with DD-WRT firmware. That way you can have a Captive Portal that they have to agree to, before entering. Also keeps track on who is logging into the system, and keep the neighborhood out.

I use a Hex type key with both of my Access Points. In your case. You may want to rotate the key every 30 days. Or even with a hotspot for Internet cafe's. Each shift can have their own key assigned to them. There are a couple ways to do this.

If you want some more information on going further. EZLAN.NET has a lot of good information.

Well it has happened once again! A little back story.

I was trying to calibrate the touchscreen on my Venue. I was using the Calibration tool in WIN 8.1. All seemed to work OK, then I restarted the computer and lost all touch control.. After several hours of support from the Dell tech. He updated several drivers and the BIOS. This is on a Venue 8 Pro less than 1 week old. Major PITA. So after that was all done I had to do a system rebuild. Reset everything to OEM. Lost all of my files and installed programs. Luckily it was only 1 week old. So on first boot after full reset I had to start as new. Put in my name, bla, bla, bla. When I logged on when I returned home it found my LAN and internet connection. I did not have to insert my password. This is at my home on my password protected LAN. Also a Linksys router with DD-WRT firmware. This time I know that the password had not been previously inserted. This was after I did the restore.

So I am 100% certain that the tablet somehow found my password. Unless there is someway that the password was somehow left on the drive from before the restore. Not supposed to be left. Is there a chance that my Smart phone is giving up passwords? I have both LANs configured in it and it is always near the computer. Near enough for a bluetooth connection.

I know that this should not happen, but I also know that it has happened twice to me. On two different LANs.

Thanks for the thoughts on using a router as a hotspot. I considered that when I set up the LAN. We are talking about fireman. I had a hard time getting everybody online with a password when I first set it up. I was afraid a hotspot would be way too much effort for me to admin. Now I'm less than 1 year away from retirement. I'll look into it for curiosity maybe give it a shot just for fun.

Bummer about the problem you had with your tablet, mine has not had any problems (knock on wood).

Try this on your DV8P. From the desktop, tap the wireless icon in the system tray which should bring up the list of networks. Find the connection to your router, press & hold then release which should popup a menu. Select "Forget this network". You should now see your router's ssid listed but you aren't connected. Tap on the ssid and then tap connect. You should be prompted for your PW when you try to connect. If not then there is a problem with your router since your tablet has no way of finding out the pw unless you turn WPS on on the router first. Typically, you press the WPS (Wifi Protected Setup) button on the router and your device has 2 minutes where it can retrieve the settings from the router. You aren't pressing the WPS button before trying to connect with your tablet, are you?

Thank You for the reply strollin. Sorry for my late response. A busy day at work today for some reason.

I did as you suggest and removed the network connection from my DV8P. Then as expected I had to reinsert the password when I tried to connect again. So far so good. I then went into Network / Connections / Manage known networks and deleted my home LAN. I will see what happens when I get home in the morning. I can assure you that this issue is as strange to me as you or anyone who may be reading this. But I am sure that it did happen. Some way, some how it did happen. Which is part of my concern.

The router is in the attic space in the station so no the WPS has not been pushed. This router runs stock Linksys firmware.

Aside from this issue. Which is really more of a router security concern than a computer problem. The reason for the reset was because of my own "tweaking" which I later found is a known issue with tablets running WIN 8. I am disappointed in Dell that they let the computer out with old BIOS when they have an updated BIOS that supposedly fixed the issue. But no big deal. All part of the learning curve of a new computer.

Thanks for the help,

Ron

Well I can report that when I got home my Venue did not find my password. So I had to insert my password as one would expect to log onto my home LAN. So I'll never know how or why it happened. But a bit of comfort in knowing it did not happen in testing.

That is only good for re-connecting to a network that you have previously entered the pw for so that the pw is already known.

Do you log in with a Microsoft Live ID? If yes have a look at your OneDrive sync settings. Under Passwords it can save sign in info for Apps, Web sites, Networks, Home group etc. All you would have had to do was log in once to that network on a PC that you logged into with a Live ID. After that, that info is synced to any other PC you use that same Live ID on.

No, that is not correct.

Microsoft Live ID does not save network (router) credentials, they are saved locally on each device. Never. The same with for instance Homegroup; joining a Windows 8 / 8.1 device to homegroup when signed in with a Microsoft Account or Live ID does not mean another device where you sign in with the same ID is automatically joined to Homegroup. Homegroup password is not stored in your Microsoft Account / Live ID. Absolutely, totally 100% sure.

OK, I stand corrected. However, I just checked my settings, everything allowed to sync on all Windows 8.1 devices (using the same Microsoft Account on each device), yet every time I have set up a new device I need to to manually enter the WPA2 passphrase and HomeGroup password.

I need to test this on a virgin Windows 8.1 Update 1 laptop now. "Stay Tuned..." ;)

I've had to enter my network password during an install, but WIFI was my only network connection so my laptop had not connected and synced yet. My desktop PC doesn't have a wireless card in it so I haven't tested if the WIFI password synced to it or not.

EDIT: I don't use Home Group and always leave the one setup by default.

Using my own words from an earlier post, I was absolutely totally 100% wrong. My sincere apologies.

That is one of the sync features I have never thought of much but apparently it works exactly as you told. I set up a Windows 8.1 laptop just now, a "virgin" rig which I recently inherited from my estranged wife who had bought it but never had time to set it up. First OOBE boot, wired connection. Entered desktop using my main Microsoft Account which is told to sync everything.

It joined HomeGroup automatically. Selecting my home WiFi network it did not ask the WPA2 passphrase but instead connected automatically although this laptop was only taken out of the retail box just now, never been used before by me, never been connected to my home network.

Once again, to great delight of some other members both here and especially at the Seven Forums: I was totally wrong.

Kari

That's good to know Kari (not good to know you were wrong , good to know network pw is synced). I don't login using my MS account on my Win 8.x machines (use local account) so never experienced that.

Retired in 2015 after working in the tech industry for 41 years. First 10 years as a Technician, the rest as a programmer/software engineer. After 1 year of retirement, I was bored so went back to work as a Robotic Process Automation Consultant. Retired for 3rd (and final) time in 2019.
A good example of that with Windows you should never assume anything, as I did.

I set up Windows 8 normally with a local administrative account, only thereafter I add my Microsoft Accounts. I have always assumed that the machine is already in HomeGroup and knows the router WPA2 key is due the fact that I have manually entered those in initial setup when first booted to said local account's desktop, before creating additional users with MS accounts.
