Win 8.1 won't connect to internet, will connect to network

I'm having a devil of a time with connecting my desktop computer.

The computer connects to the network fine, and other computer s in the house are connected to the internet, so it's not the modem or the connection.

I spent nearly an hour on the phone with Internode Support, even though this really isn't their problem, they were still nice enough to go through all the settings of the modem etc.

I read another post on here, while trying to look for the answer, and did the reset stuff in the admin command prompt, as recommended in another post here, and reboot ed the computer, but no joy.

I'd be very grateful if anyone can think of anything to try, this is driving me mad...

OK, so, rather bizarrely, tonight, after fussing around with it all day, suddenly nothing was working... My computer was not even able to connect to the network... In desperation I unplugged my computer from the wall and dragged the cable to the modem itself.

For some reason, it now works fine. I'm going to have to work out why it wasn't working through the wall connection, because the cable in the wall was literally only run last weekend.

What is the manufacturer & model of the computer? Was it just Firefox that you were trying? Did you try opening a Command Window and run a traceroute to Internode's website, google or Firefox? Open up Device Manager from the desktop. Look and see if the Network adapter driver is the Microsoft one. If it is. Download the chipset driver from the chipset manufacturer website if it is an Intel or Realtek. If it is a Broadcom or Ralink. You are better in downloading from the motherboard manufacturer's if this is a custom built. If say a HP/Compaq, Toshiba, asus, etc. Download the driver from the support website for the computer manufacturer.

If still dropping after swapping ethernet cables, or drivers. Then try a different gateway.

From your second post, it appears the cable in the wall is at fault. Have your installer check it again. Probably a flaky termination. Could also be a flaky port on the switch, though. Easy to determine which by swapping to a different port at the switch to see if that remedies it.
