I am trying to map a drive on a win8 computer.

I can locate the win8 computer and the drive but when it tries to open the connection it says.

z:\ is not accessable. Access is denied.

I have done the following:
firewall off
antivirus off
shared drive
using WORKGROUP
turned in network discovery and file sharing.

interestingly I can get access to the Users\public folder

Have you shared the folder on the computer that said folder is on?

I have tried a couple of things. The drive I am trying to access is C:\ drive. If I share and try to access a folder in c: drive I can, but I can't seem to get access to c: drive. Is there something special I need to do to get access to c: drive?

Are you using the same login that the W8 PC uses or has available?

You will never get physical access to the drive, as a User with administrator privileges. Due to how Microsoft has made it more difficult to do so. You have to allow yourself full access to the whole drive through Security. It is easier to do with the Pro edition, then it is with the Home or tablet editions.
