Connect taking longer than usual - a different complaint

    Hi All,

First off, everything is working OK once it is finally connected. I have two wifi inputs to my laptop. The internal Intel wifi-adapter is tethered to my cell phone at 2.4GHz. The other, an N600 TP-Link adapter is connected via the access point of my router which is locked to using the 5GHz band.

I have both adapters set to connect automatically, but the 5GHz one takes forever and comes back as "Limited," which is fine as win8.1 obviously considers no Internet connection as "limited."

Is there any way I can let win8.1 know that it doesn't need to keep looking for the Internet as there is none on that wifi adapter? Once it connects, I want it to stop looking for the Internetas the problem this seems to be causing is that during boot-up, the slow no-Internet 5GHz connection is causing the auto-connect to not auto-connect and I have to manually connect it every time.

I have tried setting the Metrics, but this is a base win8.1 and it doesn't have a the Group Policy Editor to see if there is anything there I can play with. I can't justify getting the win8.1-pro upgrade for 100-bucks to save me manually connecting every boot or play with the GP settings.

    Thanks

You will always have this kind of issue trying to use the laptop as a Bridging adapter to a router that is not connected to any external Internet connection.

Thanks for the reply, but I have to disagree. The fundamental reason for a LAN is to interconnect computers. It is only since TCPIP became the seemingly-default protocol for LAN-connections, that an Internet hanging off the end was expected. If I can force NetBEUI or IPX protocol for a designated LAN then it would *not* be looking for that Internet connection.

It is that directive that I am seeking that will disable TCIP on a specific LAN and thus have no need to consider a connection as "successful," just because it terminates with Internet access.

Unfortunately I cannot disable TCIP on the remote laptop as I need that for the VNC that I use to access it for other setups. Soooo, that TCPIP-restrictive instruction needs to be defined somewhere on the master PC, which, in this case is my main win8.1.

Besides I have never been one to just throw my hands up and say "always have this kind of issue." I have been programming these things since 1972, long before there was an IBM PC and like you I am retired, but that doesn't mean I just give up. Had I been thus inclined, then the several software Patents I developed would not exist today.

I am certain there is a way, it is just that I have not bothered to keep up with the intricacies of windows 8.1. I have little to no desire to spend the next six-months of my life reinventing the wheel that someone out in the wild has already built a spoke for. And, that's why I ask here.

Again. You are using the computer as a router to connect two other routing devices. You are Triple Natting. If you are going to continue using Cellular Data for Internet. I really suggest getting a proper router that allows you to plug in a Cellular modem into it. The Cisco RV-320 is one of them that allows you to use that router with a Cellular USB modem or connection.
