I have the following:
Desptop PC running windows 8.1, W8_1, cabled
Laptop running windows 8.1, W8_2, presently cabled
Laptop running windows 7 Home Premium, W7, wireless
Asustor AS-202T, NAS
Netgear router.

W8_1 can see itself and the other devices.
W8_2 can see itself and W8_1
W7 can see itself, W8_1 and NAS

This is the present situation after I followed the instructions in this link: http://www.eightforums.com/network-...8-windows-8-computer-cant-see-w2k-server.html

All ideas are welcome.

There are a bunch of NAS boxes with the same issue, Windows 8 just can't see them.

Those instructions are so Windows 8 can see older Windows servers and certain NAS boxes, the problem is it doesn't allow Windows 8 to see all NAS boxes. No idea why this is but the problem comes up over and over and over again with no end in sight.

Hi Chev65
Thanks for your comments.
The strange thing is that one W8 machine can see the NAS, the other cannot.
Also I set W8_2 on wireless. Now it can see all three PCs but still not the NAS.

Any ideas?

Did changing the lanman server and encryption settings help at all?

It's pretty strange that one machine can see the NAS while the other cannot.

If you can post a screen shot of the ipconfig/all from each machine that might help me spot any problems related to the gateway.

What firewall software are you running on the computers? Do you have the workgroups named the same on all computer? If not. Set back at the default "WORKGROUP". Did you use the "Control Center" for the NAS, to set it up on your network? ASUSTOR - Innovation Makes a Difference

As for the link regarding W2k3 servers. It has nothing to do with your issue. Because you are not running a Windows 2003 Server, nor are you on a Domain.

Go back and re-read through the User guide at ASUSTOR - Innovation Makes a Difference Along with the Control Center Guide. Also check your firewall settings on the computers. If the computers do not leave the LAN. Your router is sufficient enough to protect the computers behind it. Adding software firewalls on computers on a LAN. Just creates further headaches.

Actually those settings have already worked on multiple occasions to access a wide range of NAS boxes.

Maybe you should read up on the facts next time.

From those I'd say the two virtual machines that are on a different subnet are probably jamming up the network stack on that machine and causing the issue. This would also explain why one machine behaves differently. I've seen Hamachi cause similar problems.

To test I'd have to disable the VM's, and set IPv4 back to DHCP "remove the static settings" then see if the machine can then see the NAS.

If not, I can post a file that will reset the entire network stack on the machine with the problem which should help.

Hi Broe23
Antivirus on all computers is Bitdefender Internet Security.
I just disabled the firewall on all computers
Now the only problem seems to be W8_2 not seeing the NAS.
I can ping the NAS's IP address, but I cannot ping the NAS's network name on W8_2.

Hi Chev65

The machine with the problem is not the one with VM.
I tried the DHCP on the problem machine, but to no avail.
Please post the file for resetting the IP stack.

Seems to me that you also said the Win7 machine can't even see the Win8/2 machine so that makes it part of the problem.

Honestly machines not seeing each other isn't typically a problem on properly configured networks.

I'd need to know the exact model modem and router being used here.

Hi again
My operation got postponed so I am back at home.

The router is a Netgear WNDR3700v3
I have an Ethernet outlet in my condo so I don't know about any modem.

The problem isn't really big any more. Presently with my new NAS (ASUSTOR AS-202T) in place the only problem is that the NAS doesn't show in File Explorer-Network on my Zenbook. I can, however, map the NAS's shares in File Explorer.
Strangely enough the router doesn't show the NAS's device name.

If you have any more ideas, I'll try whatever you come up with.
If not, I can live with the present situation.

Regards
Flemming

Problem solved

I found this link: https://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357/en-us
I used the "Fix it" button, and the problem was solved.
I immediately got another problem:
In LAN settings "Use proxy server for your LAN" kept being checked. My browser kept giving me error messages.
I used Spyhunter to clean my machine. That solved the latter problem.
I suggest that users who cannot see their NASes and other stuff as computers use the manual way of cleaning the IP stack as also suggested in https://support.microsoft.com/kb/299357/en-us.
Also, if you cannot see your NAS as computer, you can normally map it as a network drive in File Explorer. You get this option when This PC is selected in File Explorer. Maybe you can only map the /public part.
