Can't RDP into Windows 8.1 Pro

Hey all,

I have a desktop running 8.1 Pro N.
A couple weeks ago I was using remote desktop to access it from both in the same LAN, and remotely over the internet.

Now, I can't get into it from either.
I have:

-verified that the listening port is the same port I'm trying to use (and changed it to default and tried that, and it didn't work either)
-made sure it's set to accept RDP connections
-verified that there are firewall policies allowing it through (and disabled the firewall temporarily, which did not help)
-read these other posts, and none of the suggestions helped

-I have port forwarding set up on the gateway, and still can't RDP in from local LAN, so I'm not worried about that.

Any other ideas anyone?
I'm at the end of my rope.
Windows update broke it or something?

Thanks for any responses!

Stop using RDP. Use Teamviewer to do remote access to between machines. A whole lot safer then RDP.

Thanks for the suggestion. Teamviewer is cool and I do use it, but suppose I want to be able to use RDP for this PC, any ideas on how to get it to work?

You open yourself up to security risks, that Microsoft has not fixed in over 16 years. No one uses RDP these days. It is either VNC or Teamviewer.

Ok, so nobody uses it.
Suppose I want to though... any ideas why it quit working?

You are certainly not answering his question so why reply?? He wants to use RDP so let him. You told him once what to use instead. Not very helpful

Maybe some helpful advice for a change?

Very common problem by the way with many similar complaints. I don't have this problem so can't test or confirm so I have no idea if any of the current solutions will work. If the User name isn't working try using the IP of the target machine. RDP also has network level authentication which does in fact make it more secure.

After upgrading to Windows 8.1, some users are facing problems with using Remote Desktop. Sometimes the Remote Desktop settings is greyed out. It may also show the error

“This computer can’t connect to the remote computer”.
“The problem might be due to low virtual memory on your computer. Close your other programs, and then try connecting again”

The issue can be fixed by editing the registry key

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\ Software\ Microsoft\ Terminal Server Gateway\ Messages\ <Domain>\ <USERNAME>\ UserPreferenceOption. Change value to 0.
