Solved Sharing printer connected to a win 8 PC with one on VISTA

I have just set up two new laptops running windows 8, and can successfully share files, and the printer connected to one of them, but I would like to also connect my laptop running Vista to be able to print. I can see both Win8 machines in file manager/devices on the Vista machine, but if I try to connect it asks for a username and password.

I haven't been able to work out what username it is looking for - tried a lot of combinations for each PC name with the homegroup password and log on passwords, but nothing seems to work.

Can anyone help where I am going wrong?

Thanks

The username and password used to log into the Vista machine is what it is asking for.

Hi,

Thanks for the reply, but that doesn't seem to work either. It just tells me I need to use a valid username and password. I checked the username on the vista machine, and as I managed to log in I'm sure I have the user/password combination correct if that is what it is meant to be.

It puts the Vista computername in front of whatever I type in the username field.

Any other thoughts?

Thanks

You do realize that Vista isn't really made to work with Homegroups?

Having a Homegroup set up on those Windows 8 machines won't help with access to files or printers from the Vista machine.

It may work if you set up an account on the Vista machine with the same user name and password as one of the Windows 8 machines is using but it's easiest to leave the Homegroup from both Windows 8 machines then test for connectivity. You would also require Vista compatible drivers to be installed on the Vista machine for the printer.

Hi,

Thanks for your help. I did realise the Vista machine can't take advantage of all the facilities of the new laptops, and I have solved the issue by easing up on the security settings on the windows 8 pc. It doesn't ask for a username and password any more. I already had a driver for the printer because it was connected to the pc we took offline, but I had to update it before it would work (old PC was on XP).

Thanks for your replies.

I'm wondering how easing up the security helped when there was a Homegroup set up, or did you just leave the Homegroup maybe?
