Windows 8.1 client to smb problem

I have a simple samba 2.3.3 file server named \\server3 with three shares (commons, financial, and software) connected to 5 XP workstations all belonging to the workgroup called LINUX. All of the XP machines have normal access to \\server3 and shared folders on each other.

We've recently add two Windows 8.1 workstations which could not see anything on the network until I add the LSA dword value for LmCompatibilityLevel. Though I can see the server and map the drives now; I still cannot view the files on any of the \\server3 shares from either of the 8.1 machines. I can however view shared files on all of the other XP machines from the 8.1's and all of the XPs can see them as well.

I can watch the 8.1 machines log on to the samba server and see that the user is given root privledges so I'm thinking that it is Windows that is keeping the files from being displayed.

I've been fighting this one for about a week and am running out of ideas so any help will be greatly appreciated.

Your question would be better answered at the IRC channels for Samba or on the forum for the distro you are running Samba on. BTW. Samba 4.1.7 is the latest.

Thanks for the reply.

The reason I thought I'd try this forum is because the samba is connecting to all of the Windows machines but only the 8.1s will not display the files. Like the LmConnectivity key I was hoping someone has discovered another missing key or something.

I'm using 2.3.3 because I hate to screw with something that works and this is the first problem I've had with it in 10 years.

The lan manager and encryption settings in the link below have been working to allow access from Windows 8 to older Windows servers and Samba servers. No need to go to another forum for such a simple work around. :)

Thanks for your response chev65. I ran through all of the suggestions in the thread (some of which I'd already tried others that were new to me) but no soap.

It is so frustrating! I can see the mapped drive but not the files on it. I can watch the 8.1 machine connect to the server. I read and write to all of the shared folders on every computer in the workgroup but the Samba server.

One more thing that I just discovered, I can list the files on the mapped drive of \\server3 from a command prompt.
So it is definitely connected to the server. This must be a security setting or something in Windows 8.

Far as I know the settings I posted a link too ARE the security settings required to fix this problem.

Those settings have worked many times in the past so it's possible the problem is something else.

Did you reboot all machines including the Samba server after making the GPO security setting adjustments?

Can you ping the server by IP?

You could also try turning off Secure Negotiate on the Windows 8 machine by following the directions in the link.

"System error 2148073478," "extended error," or "Invalid Signature" error message on SMB connections in Windows Server 2012 or Windows 8

I'll run through all of the settings again just to be sure I didn't overlook one.
I can ping the server from the Windows 8 machines.
Additionally from a cmd prompt on the Windows 8 machine I can change to a drive that is mapped--in this case P:\commons which is mapped from \\server3\commons (the Samba server)-- and with a dir command list the files on the drive.

I checked everything again and got the same results.
I downloaded Wireshark and can log the communication from the Windows 8 machine to the server; they're talking. It looks just like the trace from any of the other computers that are connected to it.
No errors except an Ethernet frame check error that seems to be routinely present from all of the computers.
