Hi Folks,

I want to move files from my old Desktop (Windows 2000 Server) to my new Laptop (Windows 8.1 Pro).

I have a Router, an Ethernet Cable and a Crossover Cable.

Note: The Router (older Netgear) always shows up as "Unidentified network". However, I can successfully share the Laptop's Internet Connection to it via the Ethernet port. It is joined to the HomeGroup and is a Private network.

The Router's IP Address is 192.168.1.1 which I can connect to using the Smartphone over Wi-Fi.

IP Config for the Ethernet Adapter is as follows.

Code:
Ethernet adapter Ethernet:
   Connection-specific DNS Suffix . :
   Description . . . . . . . . . . . : Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller
   Physical Address. . . . . . . . . : XXXXXXXX
   DHCP Enabled. . . . . . . . . . . : Yes
   Autoconfiguration Enabled . . . . : Yes
   Link-local IPv6 Address . . . . . : fe80::9905:4ead:5bc5:1e44%3(Preferred)
   Autoconfiguration IPv4 Address. . : 169.254.30.68(Preferred)
   Subnet Mask . . . . . . . . . . . : 255.255.0.0
   Default Gateway . . . . . . . . . :
   DHCPv6 IAID . . . . . . . . . . . : 54302478
   DHCPv6 Client DUID. . . . . . . . : XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
   DNS Servers . . . . . . . . . . . : fec0:0:0:ffff::1%1
                                       fec0:0:0:ffff::2%1
                                       fec0:0:0:ffff::3%1
   NetBIOS over Tcpip. . . . . . . . : Enabled

Networking is not my forte in Computing. So, it would be much appreciated if someone could, point me to the right tutorials, or, give me instructions, on how to do this.

Thanks, Michael.

What addresses should I use to configure the TCP/IP address and subnet mask etcetera of each computer?

Do I just connect the computers via the Ethernet cable between the Ethernet ports?

Thanks, Michael.

How old is your router? Usually you won't need a Crossover cable - routers and switches ports are now configured as auto MDIX or auto sensing. A straight/patch ethernet cable would do, perhaps this is the reason why your LAN connection is showing up as 'Identified network'.
I have a Router, an Ethernet Cable and a Crossover Cable.

If you have a modem and separate router or a combo modem/router, your setup should be:
Modem> Router> Computers

The Computers will need be plugged in using ethernet cables to the ethernet port of the router. If you have a Switch, then your setup should be: Modem> Router> Switch> Computers

Usually it's good to leave the LAN settings to Auto IP, why not try this first. Is there a reason why you want to assign Manual IPs to each computer?

Do you have a USB flash drive? How big are the files that you want to transfer? A 16 or 32gb flash drive will copy lots of data...might be easier for you instead of hooking up your network.

As long as you can move them across the network, with W2k Server not acting as a Server, but just as a workstation. You should have no problem moving the files over. You can get a Toshiba 1TB Canvio for under $70 these days. I keep my old 300 gb platter drive from my laptop in a SATA case, that allows both eSATA & USB transfers. Makes it real easy when needing to work on someone else's computer.

Good evening Everyone,

My Windows 2000 Server PC was set up as an Active Directory (AD) Domain Controller. Back in 2003, when there was a lot of hype about AD, I thought it would give me the opportunity to learn about it and add to my skillset but I got busy with other things however.

Therefore, I was hesitant to Demote it in case it upset my IIS Configuration.

So, I devised the following solution after some reading and a trial and error approach.

I reset the password for an existing User account, and I also created a "Computer", on the Domain Server. However, I have a feeling that that wasn't necessary.

I connected the Pass-Through cable from the active Ethernet port of the Server to one of the LAN ports of the router.

The Router's IP Address was left as is (see above).

I configured the Server Ethernet port of the Server as follows.

IP Address - 192.168.1.3
Subnet Mask - 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway - 192.168.1.1
DNS Servers - 192.168.1.1

For the Laptop I did the following.

I connected the Ethernet cable from the Ethernet port of the Laptop to one of the LAN ports of the router.

I configured the Laptop's Ethernet port to Obtain Addresses automatically which gave it an IP Address of 192.168.1.4.

From the Control Panel, I opened the System applet and clicked on the "Change settings" option which opened a Window with the title of System Properties.

Then, on the Computer Name tab, I clicked on the "Network ID..." button which resulted in a series of dialogue windows to fulfil various actions.

I selected "This computer is part of a business network; ..." which is how I configured the OS when I installed it.

Then, I chose "My company uses a network with a domain" after which I was prompted to enter the "User name", Password and "Domain name".

Another Prompt appeared which stated "Windows cannot find an account for your computer in the xxxxxxxx domain. (Your computer domain can be different from your user account domain.)"

This is why I created the Computer account on the Server.

So, after creating the Computer account, I entered the details for "Computer name" and "Computer domain".

I then received the response as seen in the following image.

JoinDomainOrWorkgroupError.PNG

So, I clicked on the "Details >>" button which gave me the following.

The following error occurred when DNS was queried for the service location (SRV) resource record used to locate an Active Directory Domain Controller (AD DC) for domain "MTBDOMAIN.COM":

The error was: "DNS name does not exist."
(error code 0x0000232B RCODE_NAME_ERROR)
The query was for the SRV record for _ldap._tcp.dc._msdcs.MTBDOMAIN.COM

Common causes of this error include the following:

- The DNS SRV records required to locate a AD DC for the domain are not registered in DNS. These records are registered with a DNS server automatically when a AD DC is added to a domain. They are updated by the AD DC at set intervals. This computer is configured to use DNS servers with the following IP addresses:

192.168.1.1
200.108.96.214
190.113.220.2

- One or more of the following zones do not include delegation to its child zone:

MTBDOMAIN.COM
COM
. (the root zone)

I don't understand what the above is trying to tell me but somehow the Server PC appeared in the list of Computers under the Network section of File Explorer on the Laptop.

Can someone advise me what needs to be done to correct the above error?

So, back on the Server, I was able to Logon to the Laptop via Explorer or the Active Directory console (need to do it again because I can't remember exactly which at the moment).

"WORKGROUP", which is the name of the currently assigned Workgroup on the Laptop, appeared as "Workgroup" under the "Microsoft Windows Network" branch of the "Entire Network" branch of "My Network Places" in Explorer on the Server.

So now, I can see and transfer files from either PC.

However, today when I reconnected the Ethernet cable from the Laptop to the WAN (Internet) port of the router, the Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) that was being shared to the Laptop's Ethernet port stopped functioning.

So, something regarding the configuring of connections between Workgroups and/or Domains upset the "apple cart" for ICS.

I found the following page.

Computer no longer connects to Internet once it's removed from domain [Solved] - Laptops - Networking

From the above page I decided to follow the following Steps and see what happens.

1. Released and renewed the IP address.
2. Reset tcp/ip by using this command: netsh int ip reset reselog.txt
3. Reset winsock by using this command: netsh winsock reset.
4. Flushed the DNS cache by using this command: ipconfig /flushdns
5. Registered DNS using this command: ipconfig /registerdns

First I turned off Sharing for the Ethernet port but don't know if that was necessary now.

I did Step 2 as I think I had already done Step 1 multiple times when pulling my hair out. Otherwise, can someone please explain what Releasing and Renewing an IP Address entails?

After entering the command for Step 2 I was prompted to Restart which I did.

After the restart I reactivated ICS for the Laptop's Internet Connection and was once again able to establish a connection to the Ethernet port and hence the router.

Et Voila!

Bloody hell, what a rigmarole!!!

So, to improve my, and others, knowledge, can someone explain in accurate detail what happened and what other actions, if any, can be taken to reduce the effort required to change from one network configuration to another?

Can this be done without requiring a restart?

I am trying to organise the purchase of a Hard Drive, and an external enclosure, for backup purposes but the shops in the USA are so insular and/or inflexible in sending products to South America and other parts of the world and lack the professional courtesy to respond to emails.

Thanks and hasta pronto, Michael.

Just get a USB Pocket drive and do it that way. Easier then going through all of the work that you have to go through.

USB Flash drives are not a viable, nor a cheap, alternative when you have a lot of files to transfer especially when the necessary tools are already at hand.

It should be simple if you use the crossover cable to connect the 2 PC's and set it up from this link:

Thanks mate!

In my search for a solution, I never found anything like that. However, Step 3 (Local User Accounts) needs more details. I'll look into later.

On a musical theme, "Do You Know the Way to San, Jose" :)

From the 60s, Shirley Bassey if I remember correctly. Great song!

Thanks, Michael.

They are when they are now under $70 for a 1TB Pocket Drive. I keep one around for stuff like this. Easier to just connect the drive, copy the files over to it. Then going through the headaches that the OP is looking at.

USB drives are a more viable option and are used all of the time for file transfers.

Ah, sorry, I thought you were referring to USB Flash (SSD) drives. If you had mentioned a Hard Drive in an External Enclosure, I would have understood because that's what I have researched for management of my Backups. :)

You can if you want to go that route. Just had a customer get the Crucial M500 240 GB SSD for under $120 a couple of weeks ago. Well worth it if you are tossing the drive around.

The Canvio drives are going for $70 for the 1TB on newegg.com right now. Great drive for the price. Very solid and stands up to accidentally knocking off of a table onto the floor (been there, done that). Compared to some of the other drives out there. Not stating to do that with a drive, due to there could be some risks to loosing data.
