No Wifi Access - New PC With Windows 8.1

    OK, it seems like I'm part of the vast conspiracy to not have 8.1 connect to the internet. Here is what's going on;

    - Wifi indicator shows "!" and reads "limited".
    - When I open the browser and click to diagnose the issue it runs through and ends with a message saying the default gateway has been fixed. About every fifth time it'll give me "The connection between your access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken."
    - This computer works fine when plugged directly into the Ethernet cable from the router.
    - Every other device on the router (other pc, xbox) work fine.

    - Brand new Toshiba E55-A5114 with 8.1
    - Performed all Windows updates, driver updates, then Toshiba updates
    - I have power cycled both router then modem, and modem then router
    - I have updated the driver for my network adapter Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless AC 7260
    - I have disabled/enabled, uninstalled/installed the driver thru the Device Manager
    - In CMD I have flushdns, netsh winsock reset
    - Made sure the power management box is unchecked
    - Here is the ipconfig in case it helps

    dual band

    Hi Alex,
my 1st thought the drivers for that wifi are dual band a number of comps/routers/modems only work on 2.4 not 5,
go to device manager networker adapter properties advanced channel mode and change it to 2.4, (dont know what make your routers is so cant say for sure.
On another note my laptop only works using the MS generic driver so try downgrading to that one a go.

    Roy,

I rolled the driver over to the MS one and it didn't make any difference. As far as the router goes, I have a Netgear WNR2000v2. Now that you mention it, everything else running on the router isn't dual band (as far as I know). Would the simplest fix be to buy a new, dual band router? And if I did, I take it that it would be backwards compatible to my other non-dual band pc.

A new wireless AC router may fix the compatibility issue between your current router and the new Toshiba with the wireless AC NIC although that could create problems with the older wireless N clients.

I say this because there are plenty of compatibility issues between older N NIC's and new AC hardware. I'm running both types and I've done plenty of testing.

You could get the new AC router and use the old n router as an access point someplace else in the network in case of any compatibility issues with the older wireless n clients.

Roll the driver back to the latest Intel driver. Do not use the Microsoft driver, since it has issues. Post the results from "netsh wlan show all". As for dual band. It would only come into play if you have a Gateway or router that is 2.4/5ghz capable. Then the mini-card would use the best of the two bands. Default rollback will always be 2.4.

If you have the Intel tools loaded, that is the better Wireless-Zero Config over the default that comes with 8.x.x. Any questions, just let me know. I have two systems with the same mini-card as you have. One is running Xubuntu 14.04 lts 64-bit with no issues. The other is Windows 8.1.1 with no issues. My A/P is only a 2.4ghz and due to the house has aluminum siding. I really do not worry much about interference from other A/P's, since I use Channel 1/5 on my Engenius ECB-350 A/P that is my main Wifi on my network.

Broe - I have switched to the intel driver. I'm unclear as to what you mean by the Intel tools. Here are the results from the cmd -

You are running the OEM driver. Go to https://downloadcenter.intel.com/Sea...reless-AC+7260 and download the appropriate Windows 8.x version for your OS. Make sure you download the package that includes the Intel ProSet tools. Those are the tools I mentioned in my previous post.

Make sure the file ends with *e164.exe That is "E" as in "Everything".

You also need to go with WPA(tkip)/WPA2(aes) for Wireless-a/ac/n for the router. Otherwise you are never going to get the speeds you wish to achieve. Also change your channel to channels 1 & 5, with the router set for 40mhz, not 20/40.

LOL he already rolled the driver back, and he already updated the driver with the Intel version or can't anybody else read around here?

And none of that will work with WEP which is over ten years out of date? That router certainly won't work with WEP and AC.

You need a dual band AC router if you want consistent connectivity with AC clients. I guess nobody else has done the testing I have with AC hardware and N clients. Don't say I didn't tell you so.

When people do not report back in what fixed the problem then it pretty much is a complete waste of time and effort for everyone involved.

It will work fine with the Wireless-n. They just need to follow instructions to get the Wireless-n speeds. Otherwise it is just good ole Wireless-g speeds as they have their A/P set up.
