Solved Is it still possible to specify the resolution of a remote desktop

I was testing out Windows 8's remote desktop connection and ran into the basic problem that my little craptop pinched and shrunk all my window size settings on the actual desktop pc. Kind of frustrating since I had everything just so. Now I'm sure in past versions you could choose to pan and scan across the whole resolution without disturbing anything. If that setting still exists, it must be buried. Can anyone think of a way to enable this?

In Metro you can right click the remote computer thumbnail and choose edit.. then indicate whether network speed determines a "high quality" display connection or if you want to force it. That is it as far as I found.

mstsc, there is Show Option toggle, in there go to Display tab. Is that what you're after?

Since I'm new to Remote Desktop, and Windows 8 encouraged me to finally get it done, I didn't know about running mstsc.exe. If anyone else is hunting, you won't find custom resolutions under the display tab. Rather, you have to save your session as a .RDP file, then open it in Notepad, and change the top 3 lines like this:

screen mode id:i:1
desktopwidth:i:2560
desktopheight:i:1600

Also optional, add a line smart sizing:i:1 for a decidedly high quality scaled image. In Windows 8, if not previous versions use the windows key and + or - for zooming.

These exists under my Option

640x480
800x600
1024x768
..
1366x768
Full Screen

By custom do you mean change to any res? I'm not sure if all monitor support all resolutions.

Usually the resolution needed and the resolutions listed by default are two different things, if you don't want to wreck the other computer's desktop. You can enter the resolution by hand.

Hi there

In order to get Max Display resolution and AERO etc you have to set the CONNECTION SPEED to Max (LAN or whatever).
Otherwise you are stuck with a fixed resolution and a Black desktop background on the remote machine).

I know it's strange -- but it's WINDOWS !!

(Don't forget you can only get at these options from the command mstsc.exe and NOT by using the RDP in Metro mode)

Cheers

I just drop the pc 's dpi then it matches up ok with a few minor web page adjustments - was 140 dpi now 125 dpi with screen resoluton of 1680X1050.

Matching dpi's - laptop dpi 125 with screen resolution 1366x768.

You only need to log off log on to reset dpi.

To connect I just open network - right click pc's name, click connect with remote desktop connection, enter password, ignore certificate, and I'm connected.

Or you can just edit a couple lines in notepad! In that case you could seamlessly view 2560x1440 on a 1024x600 netbook, for instance, without having to fix all the windows and icons later. Of course I really go 1366x768 and use Sizer to fix the window-wreckage in that scenario. 2560x1440 is actually doable on 1280x800 for basically controlling a torrent pc. Smart sizing is slick with surprisingly good quality. Even if you don't use it, you still have the benefit of maintaining the other machine's original desktop size, but will have to live with scrolling around it. Connection speed wasn't an issue in this case, I did not have that problem in 8 with the default or max speeds. It won't take the other desktop into consideration or permit custom sizes, just defaults for the monitor you're viewing.
