Internet access just hangs

Hi All,

Win8, all up to date.
Acer Laptop.
Android cell phone.
Actiontec GT-748WN router.

I am using my phone with an unlimited data package to Tether with my laptop. It works just fine, until I plug the home RJ-45 router network into the laptop and try to access a website, it hangs and times out. The router is just there as a data switch essentially as there is no DSL available and the router-wifi is set off.

It seems like the request for the website page is getting passed to both the wifi and the router and never resolves.

How can I fix this?

Is there a router setting I should be looking at? I have searched through the router firmware and can find nothing obvious to turn off or change.

A win8 setting?
Or what?

Thanks

Your problem is as you stated, when you plug in the router. The laptop is trying to use it for going online. You can get Cellular based routers, for sharing the data to other devices in the home.

It will cost you a lot less then using your cell phone, if you have a WISP or can get some form of land based data services. Cellular data uses QOS scheming by the Cellular providers, to keep any one end user from hogging the bandwidth to the radios at the cellular tower.

Hi Broe23,

Thanks, the reply, I have been working on it. Cellular routers are way out of my budget. What I have found out is that the DNS request is causing the issue.

The DNS request is being sent to the router and it has Internet to connect to and I have no clue how to get around that.

In the IPv4 properties I can set the wifi and LAN with different IPs. There is also a section there in Advanced that allows some playing with the DNS requests but I have no idea how to use them or even if that will help.

You seem knowledgeable on the network side of things, are the DNS options in Advanced something that might resolve this?

I need to have the wifi IP handled before the LAN IP.

Thanks

Seems to me that it is an issue with regards to metrics and routing. Navigate to your cellular wireless internet connection and then go to the TCP/IPv4 properties. From here adjust the metric and set it to 1. This way Windows should prefer to use your tethered internet connection for internet access instead of trying to use your router. The picture below should provide more details.

Note   Note
I am currently using Windows 7 however please understand that these steps apply to Windows 8 as well.

Hope This Helps,

Since when does tethering a wireless connection from a phone to a laptop involve a router or an Ethernet connection?

It might even work if you turned off DHCP on the router then use the router's LAN port for the connection, not the WAN or internet port, although I don't believe that tethering was made to perform this way and I'm completely unsure of what the intended purpose is.

Is the Op trying to share the laptop's tethered wireless connection through the Ethernet port with the router or what?

@ShadowJK:

Thanks for the detail you went to there, very much appreciated. I have been talking with the vendor and they are at a loss to help. We tried a lot of things but the Metrics was not one of them and nothing they suggested worked. I have packaged it up for return as they were going to send me a another one, but will cut it open and try the Metrics thing.

@chev65:
The PCs all get the Internet directly from the phone wifi Tether.
The PCs are all on a cable-network for sharing with a Nas4Free server I put together.
I had already tried a bunch router settings but nothing was working. The problem is/was a DNS request is being sent to the router by the dock as it assumes that's where the Internet is cinnected. If I still had DSL, I am sure this dock would all work. They just have not considered the fact that the Internet might not be where they assumed it would be. :)
