Error message when attempting to map network drive

Hi, I recently purchased a laptop with Windows 8 installed on it and upgraded it to 8.1 as well.

I am having trouble mapping a network drive to my computer and keep receiving the error message - "The mapped network drive could not be created because the following error has occured: A device attached to the system is not functioning." - whenever I try to connect to it. I am able to map ftp folders to this laptop without any trouble as well.

Additionally, I have this network drive mapped to my other laptop that is running Windows 7 and works just fine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated, Thanks.

Usually the Firewall is half of the problem. The other is why are you using FTP for file sharing?

Ok, thanks I'll try that tomorrow when I get to work and let you know if it remedies the problem. Also, I do not personally use FTP for my files but only use it to download others files (not sure what other methods there are to download them).

FTP does not need to be enabled as a part of Windows. It will work fine inside the Web Browser. As long as all machines on the LAN have the same workgroup name (ie WORKGROUP), they should all see each other. The key is that LLTD has to be enabled along with a few other processes.

A good resource for Windows networking is EZLAN.NET You can also find some topics at Windows 8 Forums - Search Results

I tried turning off the firewall and then connecting to the network drive, but I am still confronted with the same error message.
