Through put problem W8.1

Hi,

Hope somebody can help, i am running Windows 8.1 on a Pavillion P6 Desktop and have a sustatial loss on internet throughput . I am receiving 80mb download and 20mb up load, confirmed at my BT plate in my house, similar at the cab at the end of the road. The BT Engineer tested at my house plate with his own Vista enabled PC and a speed test showed the full 80/20 split. We immediately ran the same speed test on my desktop and got 29/14 split. This has been an issue for four months and many Engineer visits, line tests and now it looks like it is the throughput on my pc. I have a Qualcomm Atheros AR8161 PCI-E Gigabit Ethernet Controller (NDIS 6.30) and Ralink RT5390R 802.11bgn Wi-Fi Adapter, both have been up dated with new drivers. I have conducted speed tests in safe mode and have exactly the same results. I am at my wits end with this, i am running only Microsoft Essentials, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender and supplement with Malware Bytes.

Any help or people who have had similar problems, please advise?

Regards

Robert Sproson

Unless both you and BT are using the same machine, same hardware. There is no way to make a statement that the BT tech got better results. They make handheld testers that will do line service test, traceroute test, loop back test, etc.

The best thing to do if you are using nothing but Wireless-g/n devices. Is set the router/gateway for wireless-g/n. Leaving it to run at b, with no Wireless-b devices, will slow things down.

If their line tests at the jack to their equipment is correct. Why are you worrying about it affecting Wireless. If Ethernet for that unit you were using. Something is going wrong with either how you ran the Ethernet, or you just have a bad router/gateway. Another item is what speed test site you are using, what is going on on your network or that computer while you are doing the speed test. What Internet Security software are you running on your computer, etc..

Thanks for the reply,

All the tests by the Engineers and myself have been wired tests(Ethernet) - we did run the test with wireless and it was the same. The Engineer used his testers and did the line tests which showed no faults, he then plugged his own laptop running Vista into my Network and conducted a BT Wholesale speed test (incidentally this is what i have been told to use by BT) which ran at 75mb, i ran the same test second later via my PC and got less than 29mb. Internet security is supplied by Microsoft Essentials, Windows Firewall and Windows Defender and supplement with Malware Bytes.
I have run all the speed tests in Safe Mode as well and returned the same poor results - i have updated all drivers for the Ethernet adapter and Wireless card - could this be a faulty Ethernet Adapter, the speed tests fluctuate to severe extremes ?

You have already stated everything in post #3, in post #1. Safe mode will do nothing to tell you the issue. Your issue is with the Router/Gateway most likely. They probably have a QOS scheme hard coded into their firmware, that the end user cannot change.
