Solved Networking failure of Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8.

I have 3 laptop computers in the same room as the router and modem. Everything I can share is shared and all permissions are granted to everyone. In the past this allowed Windows 7 to access the D:\ Partition on Vista, but not the E:\partition. Vista could not access anything except a user's folder on Windows 7. There is no home group on the network.

Now I have Windows 8.1. All are in the same workgroup. Network discovery is on. However, when I enter whatever I think the username and password is, it is not accepted. Yet Windows 7 and Windows 8 can both access the D:\partition on Vista.

If it is possible, I would like to erase or disable all security, usernames and passwords and start over. If it is possible to network without passwords I would prefer that. I'm located in an isolated area.

If there are explicit directions to this somewhere I'll be most appreciative for a link.

If this is not possible I would like to change them all, one by one to the same thing so that 2 years from now, when I want to add another computer I will not have problems.

Vista cannot access either Windows 7 or Windows 8. Both are visible under network. The code is “0X80070035. The network path was not found.”

Windows 7 can access the D:\partition: on Vista, but not the E:\partition on Vista.

Of questionable interest, when Windows 7 accesses Vista D:\partition, in addition to the E:\partition there is listed an F:\partition along with Public, Disk and Users which are located at the same level as the other partitions. I do not have a F:\petition So I don't know what all this represents.

Vista cannot access any of the partitions on Windows 7. It can access a User's folder on Windows 7.

Windows 7 cannot access Windows 8. Windows 8 cannot access Windows 7.

Windows 8 can access the D:\partition on Vista, but not the E:\partition. When trying to access the E:\partition the code is “0X80070035. The network path was not found.”

I will appreciate any advice.

I pretty much gave up trying to access entire partitions when networking Vista and later. I used docking stations with bare drives in the docks. If I wanted to share all drive contents I made a folder directly under the root and moved all other folders into it. Then I shared that top folder. With drives installed in my machines I started out with sharing the already shared folders(such as C:\Users\Public) and turned off all firewalls. No passwords. If I wanted to copy files across machines I copied to one of the folders shared by default, then moved the file over. Since the move is just a file directory list change rather than a physical file copy when on the same partition, it doesn't really take much longer. To me it's just easier and tends to work across all Windows flavors back to XP as long as the workgroup names are the same on all machines.

Really hard to follow what you are talking about. Most people have issues with sharing, due to third party Internet security software. The other is trying to do stuff with Network shares & Registry and/or Services, that they were tweaking certain settings in the OS. Thus causing issues.

As long as you have no Firewall, or if you use an Internet Security Software and set your Private LAN to allow sharing on the LAN. You should not have any issues.

As for that error code. Some have found that it was caused by the router. The others it was as I stated above.

There shouldn't be any problems accessing Windows 7 from 8 or visa versa,...seriously? standard workgroup with the correct sharing permissions and advanced sharing settings set to share, network discovery On, File and Printer sharing On, password protected off, set encryption etc. and this should not be a problem.

Of course with Windows 7 you do need to go into the C:\Users\Username folder and allow for sharing of all Username folders if you want access. Windows 8 shares these folders by default to make it easier. You don't need to do this if you set up a Homegroup.

Of course when people go nuts installing 3 different A/V software's then wonder why sharing doesn't work?,...??

The Vista machine is probably so old that it has system file corruption problems or other problems related to bloatware, old anti virus software etc. that is preventing it from gaining access to those machines. I'd hate to try and undo problems like that from here but if those Workgroup names are the same and you enabled sharing of the C:\Users folder there should be no problems accessing the contents of the Users folder.

For system file access you need to go into the Security tab and Sharing tab of the actual C: drive, then add check marks to the permissions for "Everyone", because none of those system files are shared by default. Only the Users folder will be accessible unless you do that.

Heaven forbid somebody actually using the Public folders for sharing because they work with less restrictions than the other folders. Just turn on Public folder sharing in the Advanced Sharing settings then go into the C:\Users\Public folder's Sharing tab, advanced sharing button, and allow for sharing there as well.

These types of problems have nothing to do with a "Windows" problem and everything to do with proper set up and sharing settings of which there are tutorials all over the internet for.

Not to mention you can use a Homegroup along side a Workgroup with Vista or XP and still have access to Library folders on Win 7 or 8 machines. The following link shows you how to set this up. How do I make Windows 7 HomeGroup content accessible to Vista and XP? - TechRepublic

I think it's funny that everyone with sharing problems seems to think they have some special problem only with their particular system that has never occurred in the history of Windows.

Sorry,. Ok rant over but it was required none the less. :dinesh:
