Hi there

I've just installed W8.1 update 1 and RE-BOOTED both the Windows machine and a Linux machine on the same network - both running as REAL machines (i.e not as VM's on a Host). can't now get reliable PING !!!

Why can't Windows Networking JUST WORK -- I never have this problem with Linux. (I suspect the answer to that is the same as the answer to this question - why cant I win the Euro millions Lottery !!).

Linux machine IP address 192.168.1.108 on same lan as Windows machine (blackdog)

Ping from windows gives ??????? seems to want to ping 192.168.1.110 ????????

Linux ping TO windows --no problem

Anybody know how to "un hose this". The remote machine is 192.168.1.108 NOT 192.168.1.110 - so where does PING get this from. !!!

My Mobile phone can access all the files on 192.168.1.108 without any problem so the difficulty is definitely on the Windows machine.

Cheers
jimbo

Hi there
Thanks

That seemed to do it OK

Linux machine on 192.168.1.111 pinged OK --Now I can access my music again on Windows machine from Linux server.

(Server cloned from laptop - it's got all my music files on it !!).

Thanks tried to rep you but seems I have to rep some others before it works for you again .

Windows Networking isn't my strong point.

Cheers

Yes it would help if they didn't block ping requests with the firewall in Windows 8.

You always say they when you try to rep me LOL.
