Windows 8 and Home Networking with XP Units.

I have read many many posts, on this Forum and others, of users claiming to have solved the problem of using Windows 8 and XP on Home Networks and, unfortunately, I am inclined to disbelieve anyone who says they have solved this.

I personally believe this is NOT POSSIBLE, but would appreciate a step by step guide I could use.

I should add however that my network, 1 Windows 8, 3 XP, 1 Laptop with Windows 7, 1 laptop with Linux, all did work until recently, so I think it is one of the Windows 8 updates have screwed up the system.

At about the same time I also started receiving notifications from Microsoft that XP would no longer be supported after April, so maybe there is something intentional here.

    Cheers.

I have never had issues with networking between XP & newer versions of Windows. A lot is that people forget or not blame, is the firewall stops them from sharing between computers. Especially if they use some Third party software.

As long as you are not doing something unusual with the OS versions. It is pretty much straight forward.

As I said, it worked fine until recently.

Until recently what??? There is no conspiracy theory between the EOL on XP and your problem. XP will continue to work after the EOSD (End Of Support Date).

I have used the same network configuration for a long time, many years, and even after I upgraded my one laptop to Windows 8 everything continued to work, but suddenly, with no changes, except for Windows updates, it quit.

To stress again, I never made any changes to my Network and it just quit working, but I have rectified this now.

What I tried was to add the Windows 8 laptop IP Address to the Hosts File in each of the other PC's on my Network, and I added the IP Addresses of each of these other PC's to the Hosts File on my Windows 8 laptop.

    I hope this helps someone.

    Cheers.

Most of those "quit working" problems can be fixed by running the sfc /scannow command. Adding those IP's to the host file may fix the problem as a work around to the actual problem. Of course those IP's would need to be static or fixed IP's so they don't change.

It's even possible to access Library shares from XP and Vista when there is a Homegroup set up between Windows 8 and 7 machines. You basically just need to create standard user accounts on the Homegroup machines for the users who require access. The following link explains the details.

    Thank you for the reply.

The first thing I did when I encountered the problem was to run the System File Checker.

    Cheers.

Just My opinion.. Windows in the Win8 version is not suited for home use any longer. It is overly complex, and, even for experienced Windows users, it is counter intuitive in many areas. I think Windows 8 has taken complexity “one bridge too far” for ordinary users. This comment by me, a MSEE...
