[h=2]how to have full control of both laptops[/h]
I've learned how to share a folder and access it on my main laptop, but I would like to be able to access the whole C: drive of my other laptop.
I tried sharing C: drive and it indicates it's shared, but when I try to access it always says I don't have permission. I've gone into advanced share and made sure it says no password needed. I have mapped the network drive on main laptop, but as I said when I click on it I need permission.
As far as I can tell both laptops have different accounts.
I tried following the post that was solved on networking asking for password. On my Win 7 laptop I created another account and named it 2ndAdmin. Logged on to new account and shared C: drive. Went to my main laptop Win 8.1 and mapped network \\Dell\C drive on my Toshiba but it still asks for admin permission.
I must be doing something stupid

I'am probably missing something real simple. Can you step me in the right direction?

so far I've only tried to access the Win 7 laptop from 8.1 laptop. Both laptops have different user names. The last attempt, clicking on c drive under network for win 7 laptop asked for a user name & password. I never had a password for that laptop. Need to try all over again. I guess I need step by step instructions.
I did make a new folder on the c:\myfiles. I shared it with 8.1 laptop with no problem. So I don't know why this is so hard for C: drive.

The C: drive contains the system files. The "Administrator" account is not allowed to delete or modify system files. That's why it's not the "real" Admin account. Also it's not difficult if you do have access to all of C: to modify something that could make it unable to boot.

There have been several posts wanting to share entre drives lately in eight forums and seven forums. If you search they should pop up.

You can share from the root of the main or C: drive although it's much safer to share from the C:\Users folder instead.

You need to make changes to the permissions settings for the Authenticated user on the Security tab as well as the Sharing tab as shown in the following link.

Ok I followed exactly like the post said: Network sharing - Windows 7 Help Forums
when I hit apply the following dialog box popped up saying: C:\windows denied, C:\hiperfil.sys denied, C:\pagefile.sys denied, C:\swapfile.sys denied, all in use. The rest of files loaded.
Then went to win 8.1 machine, under network, tried to access c drive, denied access
From win 7 machine, when I try to access win 8.1 machine it asks for name & password, even though in network settings set to no password needed.
Am starting to think this can't be done. (At least by me) hate to give up though.

Update: Some good news, sort of. From the Win 7 machine I can access ALL my Win 8.1 machine now after putting in name & password.
I also shared user folder on win 7 machine.
From Win 8.1 machine I can access only user\default and user\public on win 7 machine. Getting better, now if I could access C:.

For some reason, after I added share folder to everyone on C:\Users and checked permissions read/write, I can now access C: drive of win 7 on my win 8.1 machine. The following folders c:\config.msi, C:\MSOcache, C:\Perflogs, C:\Program Files, C:\Program Files (86), C:\Program Data, and C:\windows still show access denied.
How come I can access everything on C: drive of Win 8.1 from Win 7 machine and not be able to do so from win 8.1 to win 7 machine?

I think the approach I would try is enable the real admin account on both machines. Use your normal account to log in locally. When you want to mess with the files on the remote machine, enter the userid and password of the admin on that machine. Otherwise you will have a different user account in use with every machine that connects. It's just asking for scrambled systems.

Glad I could help then. Yes for Windows 7 full access to C: you would need to "Edit" then Add the "Everyone" share then add check marks for full control etc. The settings I showed were for Windows 8 which is different than Windows 7.

Directions for Windows 7 >. HDD sharing - Windows 7 Help Forums

The access denied message is typical and you normally will need to click through various levels of security as the new settings cascade through the file structure. Basically just click yes to approve each new setting as it's applied through the file structure.
