Unresponsive internet while transferring files over wifi

I have a brand new laptop with Windows 8. On it, whenever I transfer some files over wireless on my home network, my internet connection becomes next to unresponsive (websites don't load or take forever to load, Skype chat window freezes during my typing and resumes after 10 seconds) until I kill the network transfer. Why is this happening?

It's like the network can only handle one thing at a time, which is strange because none of my other laptops have this problem. With other laptops (that have Windows 7) I could easily transfer files over wifi at full network cap, while listening to music over the network and browsing the internet with ease, watching Youtube in HD. Now with this Windows 8 machine I don't have that freedom.
Is this a Windows 8 issue? Perhaps I should get Windows 8.1..
The problem occurs on transfers between my Windows 8 laptop and my Windows 7 laptop.

    Any ideas?

    Specifications:
    Core i7 3630QM
    6 GB DDR3 SDRAM

If this is a brand new machine then you really need to download all the Windows updates before doing anything else.

After a few restarts and updates you will eventually notice another update for Windows 8.1 at the Windows store. It can take quite awhile to get through all these updates plus the upgrade to Windows 8.1.

If you have any more problems after all the updates then try the manufacture of the laptop's support site for more updated driver versions.

Issue fixed after Windows 8.1 update and network card drivers update.
    Thanks chev65.

    Thanks chev65.
It does take awhile for all those updates but hopefully was worth the wait.

Thanks for reporting your success back in to this thread.
