Virtual wifi router not working after upgrade to Win 8.1

Hi there,

I use a small usb modem for my internet access and using a usb wifi adaptor and a virtual wifi router I was able to share my internet around home quite affordably.

Every now and again the software 'virtualrouter' would cause a crash. Maybe once every 3 months.

When I updated to 8.1 the software no longer worked, nor did any other. What's more it cause a DPC-Watchdog violation within a few minutes.

When I say the software doesn't run, one of two things happen. My old program 'virtualrouter' runs as normal, but none of my devices can connect. The network is available, but connection is impossible.

With other programs I get told that the wifi adaptor is not enabled. Which it is.

Something has changed in the upgrade and I don't know what. Every option and test I've run and enabling of virtualisation says that it should work. But then the BSOD arrives.

Please help.

Welcome liamborg. When I visit the site for virtualrouter it appears it hasn't been updated since Feb 2013 and lists 8 but not 8.1 support so probably hit or miss getting it to work correctly. Have you tried compatibility mode?

Hi popeye,

Thanks. Yes I've tried compatibility mode but it doesn't help.

There was a new version of the router released in May 2013, updated to use .NET 4 and be more stable, but no luck there.

But what also confuses me is why the other ones I've tried don't recognise my wifi adaptor. The system sees it, but not the software.

Virtual devices can be a pain especially with a new OS. Maybe someone else who uses a virtual router will jump in.

Possibly some tweak in 8.1 or maybe even a registry setting.

Apparently it does work with Windows 8.1 but according to the Virtual Router site you have to type or copy in the following command into an elevated command prompt to get it working.

Code:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow

Virtual Router - Wifi Hot Spot for Windows 8, Windows 7 and 2008 R2 - Download: 1.0

Exactly what I needed after flushing down the toilet Connectify Lite (Do not use the Lite version - Annoying as HELL ! ). Big thanks to the dev - works like charm on Windows 8.1 - still needed to set the wlan mode to allow - use elevated command prompt, then type in > netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow

Did that as well.

As far as the system is concerned everything is hunky-dory. Network shows and internet connection sharing is set up, but my devices can't connect. And then the whole system crashes.

Did you uninstall the older version of virtual router then clean the system of temp. files and old registry entries using ccleaner, then install the newer version dated Feb 10 2014?

FYI, if Windows SmartScreen prevents you from installing, then you'll need to click the "Unblock" button on the installer File Properties dialog.

Hi chev65.

Thanks, I uninstalled, did a full clean using System Mechanic and re-installed...

Same results.
