Solved Laptop with Win7 and Desktop with Win8.1 sharing problem

I have a problem with network shares. In a nutshell, I can access documents in folders on my Windows 8.1 PC from my Windows 7 laptop but not from the Win 8.1 PC to the Win7 laptop.

I setup a share for the D drive on the Win7 laptop and I can access that from the Win8.1 PC, but when I try to access a folder in that D drive I am denied access.

- Both PC and Laptop are in the same homegroup
- I believe that all folders on both devices have sharing and security set properly, but perhaps I am overlooking something. I have been at this for about 6 hours now and can't solve the problem.

I don't know where to go from here.

You may have to change permissions in the Security tab, for who can access that folder. Homegroups make things a little harder to troubleshoot. It is easier to troubleshoot if you were using conventional Network sharing.

Do a "Leave Homegroup" on both machines, and then try sharing the folder by right clicking on it, then left click on the "Share With" and choose "Advance Sharing". See if that works.

I left the Homegroup on both machines and edited the Advanced settings as below. Still can't access the shared drives or folders on either machine.

Leave Homegroup on both computers - yes

Private (current profile)

network discovery - on
file and printer sharing - on
homegroup connections - use user accounts and passwords

All Networks

Public folder sharing - turned on sharing
file sharing - used 128-bit encryption
Password protected sharing - Turned off password protected sharing

I want to share the D (data) drive on my Windows 8.1 machine. Here are the new settings.

D:\
Shared
Network Path:
\\Asusmain\d

Advanced Sharing
Share name: D
Permissions
Group or user names: Everyone (Full Control, Change, Read - all Allow)

If the problem is only accessing this one drive on the Windows 7 machine then the following link should help.

Firewall would be the next thing to check, along with messed up dns & IP info on both computers. Are you using the built in Windows firewall, or a third party Internet Security software suite? What is the manufacturer & model of the router you are using?

chev65 - I tried the method in that link you sent me HDD sharing - Windows 7 Help Forums. Didn't make any difference.

broe23 - I am using Windows Firewall and Windows Defender along with my Router firewall. No third party suite. There is no error or alert message from the Windows Firewall and I have it set to notify me if there is a problem. When I try to access a folder on one machine or the other the error message dialog box has a title of "Network error" and the message in the box is: "You do not have permisssion . . . . . . . Notify your system adminstrator . . . . "

Both laptop and desktop are using the same default gateway: 192.168.1.1. Both are set to obtain the default DNS automatically. I have no trouble with websites whatsoever, they appear quickly and accurately.

I can ping back and forth from one to another with no problem.

I am using a Lynksys WRT54g router. I had it when I had the Win7 laptop connected to my old XP Desktop and was able to network and share files with both of these computers with no problems. The problem started when I tried to network the Win7 laptop to my new Win8.1 desktop. I know the router is old but it functions better than the new TP-Link Archer C7 1750n router that I recently purchased. (it drops connections)

On the laptop I have the following folders that are shared:

Christine Documents
D (drive)
Downloads
Favorites
mSecure
My Music
My Pictures
My Videos
Paul Documents
Users

Strangely, from my desktop I can access the last two (Paul Documents and Users) through the network but not the other eight even though the settings on all folders "appear" to be the same. Could it be an issue with "ownership"?

Also, there are four "Account Unknown" (with a long string of hypenated numbers following this phrase) in the Security tab of most of these folders. To my knowledge I didn't add them and I'm not sure how they got there. Could this have something to do with the problem? I deleted all four in the My Pictures folder as an experiment but it made no difference.

I'd like to see screen shots of the settings for the Security tab main Users folder on the drive you are trying to share.

With Windows 7 it's also required to add permissions to the individual Users folder in order to remove the lock from the Users\Username folder in order to share them although this isn't required when you have already set up a Homegroup which appears to be the case. I'm referring to drive sharing here.

They should match with picture #2 in the link below which shows the Users folder Security permissions.

whest - thanks for the info on ownership but that is way beyond my capability and I don't want to mess with it.

chev65 - see attached screenshots. In the security dialog I even have all the other groups, admins, etc. besides Everyone checked with full permissions.

I am pulling my hair out with this problem. I have setup a number of networks in the past, had to make a couple of minor tweaks occasionally, but always succeeded. This one is beyond impossible.

I think I have found the problem, or at least part of it.

Since I have been working without a Homegroup for the last two days while testing, I decided to create a new one on the Desktop and then joined it with the laptop. However, I still could not access files in either direction. It was the original problem.

I then created a new local user (Paul) on the AsusLaptop with admin permissions. Logging on with that account I am able to access all of the files on the D drive of the AsusMain desktop. So the original user account (Christine) on the laptop must be corrupted.

However, in the other direction (from AsusMain to AsusLaptop) I only see 4 libraries on AsusLaptop with nothing in them (see screenshot), even though there are files in the "Documents" library on the laptop. Double clicking them does nothing. It is as if they are not folders or files, but simply placeholders of some kind - strange.

At the bottom of the screen under Network are the 9 folders plus the "D" drive on the laptop. Only "Paul Documents" and "Users" are accessible. I think that is that because the others were create by the corrupted user account? Am I right about that?

I don't care about the Libraries, I don't use them anyhow but I would like to know if there is a method of transferring files and settings from one account (Christine - the corrupted one) to my new Paul account? Or am I asking for trouble doing that. Worst case, I can make a current backup of the files and then just delete the Christine account and redo all the settings for the new Paul account.

Finally, what advice do you also have for going back and resetting the security and sharing on both computers. I have changed so much that I really don't know where to begin.

Yes I can see with all the shares created which can create huge problems. Resetting all that would be quite a task but can be done. You would have more security and better luck using a Microsoft account when you set up these machines.

You really don't want to mess with the NTFS permission settings unless you have to and in most cases it can be avoided by using Homegroups.

To chev65 and all the others of you who help me with this problem - a big thank you. I have transferred all my files to the new user account on the laptop and deleted the corrupted account. I can now access files in both directions.

I plan to go through every folder and setting and check the security and sharing permissions and set it up to be as secure as possible. Make one change then test. It could take a while.

Thanks again guys for all your help.

Ok good, glad I could help.

I wouldn't mess with the NTFS permissions unless it's absolutely necessary.

If you want more security create a Homegroup and join from the other machine. This will isolate all folders from anyone else connecting to the local Workgroup.

Feel free to mark this as solved. :)
