    Wifi keeps going off

I don't understand why Windows 8.1 is giving me so many issues. My laptop is unable to stay connected to the wifi for long and sometimes I am unable to connect. My phone and tablet stay connected to the wifi while my laptop can't. I tried all the remedies for it and yet it has issues. Is it because I had installed spotflux and tunnel bear on my laptop? Could they be the reason for the conflict?

Lets start with the basics. What is the manufacturer & model of your wireless router? How far away from it are you? Does any other devices in the residence have problems staying connected to the wireless router.

A lot of times it can be a bad driver, bad wireless card, or just a bad wireless router.

Using a D-Link 615. It's around 10 yards away from me. I am able to use all my other devices easily without any problems. Ever since I upgraded to Win 8.1 it's been giving me issues.

10 yards is a pretty far distance. No wonder why you are having issues with keeping a connection to that unit.

What other devices are you referring to?

10 yards (30 feet) away from a Wi-Fi router is nothing unless there is some weird obstruction in between.

They have a better antenna in them. The antenna in laptops are about the size of a quarter, and are in the lid where the screen is. Only way to get a better connection, is to use a USB adapter with an external antenna. Some have modified their cases to allow an external antenna to attach to the mini-card on the laptop.

Have used my brother's laptop in the room. It works fine. Infact my HP laptop used to work fine here but then it was Windows 7.

Every computer or tablet or smartphone, is going to behave different from each other. Each chipset and antenna on those devices are different. One may use higher power and a better antenna, but another may use lower power and a smaller antenna or just an end of the wire that goes from the card, to act as the antenna.

Only way to know what the signal quality is from where you are with your laptop or on your brother's, is to use inSSIDer to compare results.

    shobz,

Considering that your problem seems to coincide with your upgrade to 8.1 and other devices currently stay connected, the issue likely does have something to do with the 8.1 upgrade. Out of curiosity I did a Google Search for windows Wi-Fi connectivity problems and found that the issue you have described is not unique to you. There were quite a few reports that were very similar to yours. You might try using the Search feature on this forum to look for other threads that may have a common problem and Google Search for the problem as well.

From what you have described, I doubt the problem is with your wireless setup. Wireless hubs in a home or building are usually good up to 100 feet depending on obstructions that might be present. Your problem is likely to be with a mismatched driver after the upgrade to 8.1.
