ASUS X550L Windows 8 Default Gateway not avaliable?

Hello,

I recently purchased a new Asus laptop and have been having problems with my home network. I get disconnected probably once every 15 minutes and when the trouble shooter was run I get "default gateway unavaliable"

I believe this is due to my router. I have Comcast and it seems whenever I am connected to mine (or my girlfriends same model and make) I get disconnected but at my parent's house I dont have any problems.

Does anyone have any ideas? I talked to the ASUS people and was given a driver that didnt work (as far as I know I installed it correctly) and was also told to refresh my computer to factory settings incase it was something I installed. Neither worked.

Here is my IPconfig date (I have unchecked the 'allow computer to turn off to conserve power' option)

There has been a lot of talk with the gateways that Comcast is Leasing, are poor quality when it comes to wireless. You can use an Access Point though with the Gateway. The Trendnet TEW-690ap is a good Wireless-N A/P.

I have the Motorola SB6141 modem, TP-Link TL-R600VPN Wired Router, and Engenius ECB350 A/P for my setup with Comcast. I went that route, due to 1) I did not want to be a part of Comcast's Mesh Network. 2) I wanted my own equipment and with that, an Enterprise grade router, along with Enterprise grade Access Point.

I don't really understand what you're saying. I am not especially great with all of this in depth technical stuff. Is there no way to fix it so it works as is? My roommate has no problem connecting and I never did on my old ASUS windows 7 laptop

Basically going from one router to another with a computer, you can have issues. Also as I stated, there has been a lot of issues with the Leased Gateways, that Comcast is handing out. That is why I gave the suggestion for you may want to look into possibly going the same route I did.

The equipment I listed, is working very well for what we do with our connection with Comcast. I have not had any issues with it. Compared to what people are having with the all-in-one Gateways.

Just let me know which part of what I posted previously, that you want more information on, and I can go into more detail to assist you.

Try opening up a Command Window as Administrator, and run the following two commands without the quotes: "ipconfig /flushdns" and "netsh winsock reset catalog". See how that works.

You can also if you can, post the results from inside a command Window (without the quotes): "netsh wlan show all". It will give us what driver you have installed for the wireless adapter, and also the strength of the access points that are around you. Note when you do, what the A/P name is for the one you are connecting to.

If it is just Ethernet, and the gateway is truly a gateway, not a modem (look on the label, and post what it states for manufacturer & model #. Do not post the Serial number, MAC ID, or Wireless key), you should not be getting disconnected.

I just find that Comcast is handing out bad equipment, so that they can create a Wireless "Mesh" network". They do not really care so much if the customer is getting the service they are paying for. But if you purchase your own equipment, go the route I did, and it is going to be Rock solid.

The last thing in closing, can you post the signals that the gateway is showing, and log. If you do not know how to get that information, post the model#, manufacturer, I can help you in how to find that information. You would just put in the address bar the 10.0.0.1 IP, and it should give you the modem administration interface.

You can also try turning off IPv6 on your computer and see if that helps. Sorry for being all over on this, but it is just how it came out as I was thinking of what you may want to look for, as I was typing. As I stated before. If you want to break down what I typed for more information on that subject, just post what you want, and I will try to help you better on that point.

I'd suggest reading the following statement from the Asus site concerning your particular machine. They seem to be aware of the compatibility problem.

Realtek LAN Driver
Prior to Windows 8.1 upgrade, please run Windows Update and install ALL updates, including optional updates, to minimize the risk of incompatibility.
Notice the part about minimizing the risk of compatibility, that means compatibility with certain routers/modems.

After the upgrade to Windows 8.1, please run Windows Update again.

If you still experience issue with this device, please install this driver. Referring to the drivers in the link. This driver is for Windows 8.1 upgrade.

Referring to the drivers in the link for Windows 8.1
Notebooks & Ultrabooks - X550CC

Let me know if you can connect after the updates etc. :)

So, I installed all the updates including a wireless driver and still have the same problem. It looks like I might need to research a different wireless router instead of the Comcast Gateway I use alreay. Is it possible they will fix this is the future? It seems a little rediculous to have built a computer that isnt compatable with everything.

Does anyone have suggestions for reasonably prices wireless setups?

That is going to be the best option. Personally I would go with modem, wired router and Access Point, vs. an all in one device. I use the Motorola SB6141 modem, TP-Link TL-R600VPN router, and Engenius ECB350 A/P. On Monday, I will be getting the 105mbps Down package from Comcast.

My line runs a little hot, so I purchased an inline attenuator from partsexpress.com, due to the 7db 4-way splitter was too much for the modem, and plus had 3 unused taps. The 6db inline attentuator brought it down to not as low as the 7db, but better then having a 4-way splitter with only one tap used, just for the modem.

Did you update the system to Windows 8.1 then run Windows update?

It's not the computer that isn't compatible it's the particular network adaptor/driver being used in combination with this particular modem. Much better off with a standard modem and after market router, I see endless problems with those ISP issued combo units.
