Kind of an odd question but: subttiles in RDP in Windows 8

This isn't even a question really but me looking for some clarification.

When I ran a video with subtitles in Windows 7 over RDP, the video worked perfectly but my subtitles didn't load. But when I played the same video in Windows 8 over RDP, they did.

Is there something...different about Windows 8's RDP that allows this to work?

People still use RDP. Most everyone is using Teamviewer or Logmein these days.

LogMeIn stopped being free at the end of January.

And I was using RDP because my Ultrabook lacks an optical drive and I was trying to watch a video on a disc. The video's too large to send through the network but running it through RDP actually turned out pretty good, which surprised me.

Regardless of what program is being used to remote into a computer, video properties can be disabled, to make the connection faster. You can get a USB DVD drive for around $28 these days. Newegg.com - Computer Hardware, CD / DVD / Blu-Ray Burners & Media, External CD / DVD / Blu-Ray Drives, Newegg Iron Egg

Try VNC and see how that works out in remote watching the DVD. See this for how to use VLC to view media (ie DVD's) on another computer. How to Use VLC Media Player to Stream Multimedia to Another Computer Also see https://forum.videolan.org/viewtopic.php?t=2132
