Losing wireless while on hdmi with the lid closed

When I am using hdmi as the single display, I am losing wireless when the lid is closed.
Closing the lid is arranged to "do nothing" on both battery and plug.
Wireless becomes:

- Not able to see any wireless networks except the only one chosen as " automatically connect" and it cannot connect to that either.

I got so upset, changed a few settings in adapter settings, messed stuff up, so had to install the OS again.

Is that something normal that wireless acts up when the lid is closed on hdmi display? It never did this without the hdmi.

Now I am using it with the lid open.

Thanks.

Check the power management tab of the wireless adapter to see if the box is checked to allow the computer to turn off the device to save power. ;)

Why does it turn it off while it is on plug and display is on hdmi? When I wasn't using the hdmi, I would turn off the monitor with a shortcut, close the lid and everything was allright. (Was able to remotely check it also).

If it is turned off, why does it say wireless was on and only seeing the connection it always connects, but not able to connect (and not seeing any other one)?

I will try unchecking that option and report.

Thanks.

No, even with that option unchecked; it starts slowly not seeing the other wireless connections till it only sees the one it is connected to and then it disconnects from it and cannot reconnect to it again even though it still sees it (only it).

How far are you from the router, and is it near any electronic device, ie. wireless telephone base, microwave, television, or inside an enclosed shelf. Are you running in power saving mode or high performance when this adapter loses 'sight' of all other connections. If you have access to the router wifi settings, try changing the channel to 6 or 11. Try another usb wifi adapter to see if it loses sight the same way... :tip:

Let me put it this way:

Wireless do not have any problems when I close the lid.
Wireless only have problems when I close the lid while it is connected to the TV by HDMI cable.
And wireless do not have any problems when I keep the lid open while it is connected to the TV by HDMI Cable.
So, there must be something with the lid making the wireless go off.

By the way, my question is only for knowledge as I can use the notebook with the lid open.
(Of course closing it protects the keyboard from accidental spills)

I was just wondering if this is a common problem or not. I just want to learn.

I don't think it is the router as I explained above, but the router is 2 feet (~.5m) away from the notebook. It is near wireless telephone base and TV and I am always using the high performance.

Lid open, no problem; lid closed, problems; it must be something with the lid.

Thanks for the suggestions and replies.

It would be due to the HDMI signal. When you close the lid, whatever you are play, is it still playing on the hdtv or projector you are using, or is the browser window still showing up on the device that you have connected to the hdmi cable? Have you tried updating your display drivers, and also tried downloading the drivers for the wireless from the laptop manufacturer website.

I found that the Microsoft drivers for wireless, are causing issues in Windows 8. I would not doubt that it is a driver that was updated through Windows/Microsoft update that is the culprit.

I am using the HDTV as the single display so the output is to TV only. Laptop monitor is black if I could explain. Display drivers are updated. I have the original drivers DVD and also checked it through the Website.

I am just trying to understand the situation. Situation is like; when the laptop is displaying output to HDTV and when the lid is closed, the wireless can't breathe for some reason and the only way to keep the oxygen flowing is keeping the lid open even though there is no display output to the laptop monitor.

Wireless does not need to breathe. All that is up in the lid for the wireless, is the antenna. The wireless card is in a mini-card PCIe slot on the motherboard. Again, when you close the lid, does the image on the HDTV go away, or is it still showing up on the hdtv?

Power settings is what I would be checking in Control Panel > Power Options. Also check the behavior for the Display properties, in the utility for it. It helps to know what GPU chipset that you have (nVidia or AMD), along with manufacturer & model of the laptop.

Most laptops are setup up, that when the lid is closed, the display goes off. As long as you leave the lid up, the display stays on. In your case, you either have a bad antenna wire for your wireless, or something else is triggering the disconnect from wireless.

Also double check the advanced properties for the wireless adapter, to make sure that it is not set to go to sleep, same as in the Power options.

Display on HDMI doesn't go away when I close the lid.

Power is set to highest performance on display properties.

Control Panel options are set not to turn the wireless off in any occasion.

When the display is on HDMI, I have to keep the lid open to have the wireless working correctly, that is all I know.
Something is making lose its abilities.

No big deal I guess.

Thanks for the replies.

My guess is that the Wireless antenna wire has a break in it. You can just replace it with a new antenna wire. Doing the antenna wire replacement, will mean taking the back cover off, the bezel around the display and then pulling the old antenna out, and fishing the new one up. It is easier, to just leave the old wire in place, tape the new wire to it, then use the old wire as a pull string.

I actually just placed my second antenna inside the case to the right side, and it works very well. I am getting 300mbps, no probblems like I was with the single antenna. Try just attaching the new replacement antenna first, then see what happens. Otherwise, you could just go with a USB adapter that is Wireless-AC 2.4ghz/5ghz capable, and forgive tearing apart your unit, to replace the antenna.

I got these for adding a second antenna, on two units, that we stuck the Intel 7260 Dual-Band Wireless-AC mini-card into. Due to the units only had one antenna for the Realtek wifi adapters. Amazon.com : Pair Laptop Wireless Mini PCI PCI-E Internal Antenna : Computers & Accessories

Now if you want the mini-card, if you do not currently have Wireless-AC, you can get it from CDW.com for $28. https://www.cdw.com/shop/products/Intel-Dual-Band-Wireless-AC-7260-network-adapter/3122324.aspx
