    Cant connect to internet.

My step daughter has Win8 and 2 days ago she was unable to connect to the internet after previously being OK. She gave it to me to see if I could sort it but a lot of years ago I switched to Linux and not up to date on windows. On checking for viruses I found PWS:Win32/ZBot and got rid of it but it still will not connect to the internet even with my BT router. The message I get is blocked by firewall but when I turn off the firewall still nothing. Maybe the getting rid of the virus and turning off the firewall will do nothing I don't know but please if I can get some information it might get fixed.

    Hi,

    Ouch. Very much ouch.

Only reasonable advice which should be followed, I stress, is to use Killdisk to 0 out the drive then install Windows fresh.

Do NOT network this machine in any way. It will encrypt personal files on other machines on your lan and you will have to pay a large ransom as the only known method of recovery.

When it is all done and you give her back the machine, tell her about never clicking on things that ask you to update stuff and never click on any links in e-mails, unless the source is trusted 100% and even then, use some discretion.

Show her to always update Flash from here only: FH

You might try using system restore to return this machine to a previous working state.

According to Windows it can be removed but there could still be problems associated with this virus, this pretty much goes without saying.

I would recommend against doing anything other than using Killdisk first, because the malware in question downloads variants and there is no telling what else has been done to the machine. There is much malware that can even survive a clean Windows install complete with a format while doing so. Killdisk ensures a clean drive to start with.

    In addition:

    Threat behavior

PWS:Win32/Zbot is a family of trojans that are created by kits known as "Zeus". These kits are bought and sold on the cyberworld black market.
They can hook API addresses and inject code into webpages to monitor online banking activities.
    Distribution methods

PWS:Win32/Zbot is a widespread and pervasive malware family. It uses several different methods to spread and infect your PC.

Thanks for the replies, looks grim and I don't know If she has a Win8 installation disc in the event of wiping the drive. She is a district nurse with a degree and probably has stuff she does not want to loose on the laptop. The last I heard Windows had stopped issuing Windows discs on new computers. The last Windows I bought was Win98 although I have had computers with XP & Vista which I made dual boot with Linux and the rest Linux only but the XP & Vista never had no installation discs. After reading the posts sent I am not sure what to do at the moment.

Use a Linux live CD to save her data (carefully) before doing anything else.

There should be a recovery partition you can use by pressing a Fn key at boot to restore the computer to it factory new state. Otherwise see if you can order the recovery discs from the manufacturer.

I think I will try what you say Rich as she has no Disc but first I must tell her what I am going to do. She said put the computer on Linux like the ones I have but I think Linux is not for everyone as you have to do most things your self, you may know this if you have ever used it. I will report on the outcome.
