Problem of access to shared resources on a network

Hello.

I have two pcs: an old desktop pc with windows xp and a notebook with windows 8.
Both computers are connected to the Internet through an adsl router and are also connected togheter, sharing files and folders through plain networking: HomeGroup would not work with windows xp.

Therefore, both computers are under the same workgroup, have different IP addresses and both share printers and folders.

I am able to log into my notebook [running windows 8] from my desktop pc [running windows xp] but not vice versa.

When my windows 8 machine prompts me for user name and password to log into my windows xp machine, my user name and password are not recognised.

I tried setting up the same user name with the same password on both machines, but whilst now I am able from my Windows XP machine to log directly into my Windows 8 machine, without entering user name and password, I am still receiving the 'The user name or password is incorrect' message from my windows 8 machine.

In both machine I installed Comodo Internet Security.
I set up Comodo Firewall in my Windows XP machine to receive Remote Desktop connections.
Now I am able to connect to my XP machine from my Windows 8 machine via Remote Desktop.
I am still unable to log into it from the Network folder, though.

Is there anyone who have any idea of how to procede?
Thanks in advance for any help.

Turn off all firewalls and make sure the workgroup network is set to Private. Try to access the already shared folders such as All Users on XP and Public on W8. Once I get everything working normally with those, then I try sharing other folders.

When everything works the way you want, then is the time to try turning on security such as firewalls. I don't know how many times I set a firewall to settings that always worked before, but I could do nothing until I disabled it altogether.

Comodo Internet Security is the main cause why you are not able to access from the other machine. I finally dumped it, after having issues, and just use the Windows 8 Firewall on the one unit I still have it installed on, when going out in public.

On the Private LAN. The Firewall is off, due to the Router I have is aggressive enough, to protect from intrusions.

Thanks in advance for any help.

You might try running the network set up wizard on the XP machine.

Both machines need to be turned on and connected for the network wizard to work.
