WLAN Autoconfig Service not running - Windows 8

Hi guys,

I was wondering if anyone would be able to advise me on a fix for a problem I'm having with my WLAN Autoconfig, windows keeps telling me that the service isn't running - I've noticed when I run Services.msc that it's usually not on, so I start it up which seemed to have solved the problem yesterday but today - not so much...

So now it's not showing visible wireless networks (all working fine on the network with other pc's on xp), doesn't seem to respond to going into flight mode etc.

All drivers are up to date for the laptop (it's probably only a couple of months old).

If there's any particular information you need just let me know and I'll get it right over to you.

EDIT: Thought I had it working but same error again now - but I've noticed when it did briefly start up again another problem, all the other computers (running on trusty xp) are connected no problems with the internet, whereas the Wifi on my laptop has discovered the Wifi, but only as a local connection (triangle logo with squares in each corner)

With this service not starting it's likely there is some file corruption causing the problem.

Click on the link and follow directions to run a system file scan, let me know what it says. If the system doesn't pass the scan then run the DISM command and see what it says.

IT found some corrupt files, but apparently these were repaired. Any ideas? It's really strange, as I've just reset the router and it's actually connected - I'm sure it won't last mind as I've reset the router a couple of times already today with no joy.

Resetting the router doesn't really effect the Wlan service not starting up which is the bigger problem.

Try running the DISM command from the link and see what it says.

If you can't run the DISM command then you have big problems for certain. Posting the log might tell us something.

Be sure and run the command as printed copy/paste, the spaces are required before the /> Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

You might try rebooting and then run the DISM command again to see if it will run as it should.

Try connecting to the internet using a wired connection then run the DISM scan.
This repair scan requires that you have an internet connection.

I ran it this morning, and it did perform the scan but doesn't look like it's come back with much, see print screen below.

At least now we have a reason for the wireless not to work. I'd expect to see strange problems like this when machines can't run the DISM repair scan.

Have you updated to Windows 8.1 yet, no mention of this anywhere and at this point upgrading to 8.1 with a clean install would most likely fix the problem.

No I haven't upgraded as of yet - I'll have a go later and let you know how I get on.

It's not letting me upgrade to 8.1, I'm guessing it's because there is a particular upgrade for windows 8 that keeps failing to install.

Error Code 80073712 - I've followed through window's advice, I installed and ran windows update diagnostic - came back with:



Then I ran DISM.exe/ .../ scan (Came back with 'The component store is repairable & The operation completed successfully' & DISM.exe/ .../ Restorehealth with no real results as per the previous attempts.

Starting to think this laptop has something against me.

I don't know what happened to this laptop but it was royally messed up, I was correct about the system file problem but it appears to be much worse than that.

The update to 8.1 requires that certain Windows updates are installed correctly. In your case you might try resetting the system which should set it back to default state of Windows 8, after that you need to install all the updates which will eventually give you the option to install Windows 8.1 from the Windows store.
