    How do networked computer communicate?

It just occurred to me that I don't know how this works.

When I share files, are they transferred via my router, the internet, directly computer to computer, black magic?

    Inquiring minds want to know

When the computers are attached to a LAN, they communicate directly with one another. The use SMB and CIFS to move files across the network.

A router routes traffic between 2 networks, namely your internal home network and your ISP's network.

My main desktop is connected to a LAN by cable (DSL modem/wireless router) for the internet. I have another desktop that I use just for home theater purposes with a USB wireless adapter, and I have a Notebook and Tablet. They are all on the network, so except for the main desktop, the network is wireless. Do they then communicate via their wireless modems?

Yes, the wireless devices talk via the router. In this case, it's better to think of the router more or less as a wireless access point. Now, if your wireless is setup an ad hoc network, the computers can communicate directly without using the router at all.

The computers on the wireless network are talking via their wireless network adapters.
