XP Notebook doesn't see 8.1 tablet

My Dell Venue Pro 8 tablet (Windows 8.1) shows my XP Notebook under Network, and I can pass files back and forth to a shared folder on the XP Notebook.

But just to have another option, I'd like to see a shared file that resides on the 8.1 tablet, on the XP Notebook. I can't get it to work, the tablet doesn't appear under Network Places, and the Add Network Places Wizard won't let me add the tablet.

Some how, I managed to do it with my Windows 8.1 Desktop (The Desktop appears under "The Internet" in My Network Places on the Notebook), but I have no idea how I did it.

Any ideas?

Workgroup Settings

Hi,

I have a mixed set-up with XP Pro.
Something to check, I did my set-up nearly 6 months ago

On XP Notebook,
- Right click "My Computer"
- Click "Properties"
- click "Computer Name" tab
On the tab you have Workgroup: [name] the default I think is [WORKGROUP]

On your Win8 machines
- Right click "My Computer"
- Click "Properties"

It brings up a window.
There is a section, "Computer name, domain and work group settings"
There is Workgroup [name] again, I think is the default is [WORKGROUP]

All machines need same workgroup name.
If they are different.?, set them the same, say HOMENET1
There is a change button/link next to them

Just a thought.

Thanks Dave,

The Work Group was correct.

This is just another of those computer mysteries that I've encountered since my first computer encounter in college in the mid 60's.

I struggled with this for hours yesterday, but I thought I'd give it another shot this morning, using the Add Network Place, and you guessed it, it worked the first time!
