Alas, the forum allows only very short titles - so short as to defy creation of an explanatory title - so my title was probably unclear.
I've been trying to allow a Windows 8 computer to access files residing on a Windows 7 computer.
After a few hassles+, I got the computers sharing a common Homegroup.
When I attempt (from the Windows 8 computer) to access a folder on the Windows 7 computer, I receive an error message of the form:
\\computer\folder is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource.
In an effort to resolve this I:
* Disabled Windows Firewall (for private networks) on the "target" (Windows 7) computer (i.e., the problem is not caused by Windows Firewall).
* Temporarily disabled Norton Anti-Virus, just in case.
* Confirmed that there are no user credentials set up on the "accessing" (Windows 8) computer (i.e, the problem is not a result of incorrect credentials).
* Insured that the Windows 7 account via which access occurs IS password protected (i.e., the problem is not due to an "empty" password on the user account - which is disallowed for remote access).
[My default user account is not password protected. However, I created two password-protected accounts, just for remote access, one administrator and one standard, and tried accessing them both from the Windows 8 computer. Same error message as above.]
Any help appreciated.
+Difficulties Joining Existing Homegroup (which I resolved), in case anyone cares.
Initially, Windows 8 didn't recognize the existence of the Windows 7 Homegroup.
Rebooting both computers didn't help.
All settings on the Windows 8 computer were correct.
It turned out, however, that I had to enable auto-detect-networks on the Windows 7 computer (perhaps the auto-detection also causes the associated computer to "announce" itself).
It still didn't work - until I rebooted both computers (after making the change).
Once the Windows 7 Homegroup was recognized, I got another error when I attempted to join it. I don't recall the error, but I resolved it.
I then encountered a third error: upon entering he Homegroup password, I was informed that the Homegroup was no longer detected.
I ran the Homegroup Troubleshooter on both computers. No problems were found on the Windows 8 computer, but the Windows 7 computer reported that the existence of multiple networks might cause problems.
I uninstalled Hamachi (thus eliminating the "Hamachi network").
After which, the Windows 8 computer was able to join the Windows 7 Homegroup.
Yippee.
